This Ruan Mei ensemble has finally come to life, taking nearly a month from initial pattern drafting to custom prop fabrication. I am thoroughly satisfied with the final deliverables, especially the moody, low-key lighting ambiance that captured the precise aloof aesthetic I envisioned.
Let's start with the garment details: a form-fitting bodice weaving deep navy and cyan tones, accented by golden filigree borders, layered with an understated patterned light-toned shawl. To faithfully convey the character's demeanor, I fine-tuned both the neckline contour and the drape of the pearl necklace. The blue-and-gold pendant at the throat was custom-ordered from an accessory studio and carries refined tactile quality. The lower half features a high-slit deep-blue skirt adorned with plum blossom patterns and golden linework. To look optimal before the lens, the waist and bust cuts were tailored for a closer fit to natural body curves, lending the silhouette organic fullness on camera.
For props, the pipa cradled in my arms was custom-built—finished in deep blue with golden cloud-scroll trims along the edges, crowned with pink-and-white plum blossom sprigs at the headstock. Though quite heavy, holding it in poses instantly immersed the subject into that classical fantasy atmosphere. The long black leather gloves served as an essential highlight; paired with metallic wrist cuffs, they contoured the arm lines while adding a dash of gallant composure.
Regarding hair and makeup, to complement her cool temperament, I deepened the eye contours, kept blush minimal, and chose a muted lip tone. The wig was cut into a textured short style with wispy bangs, detailed with pomade before shooting to give the strands deliberate definition without appearing unkempt. Letting loose strands frame both cheeks during the shoot enhanced a sense of melancholy and detachment before the camera.
On set, we constructed a scenic backdrop featuring traditional dark-tiled eaves, with the subject seated on a plush white fur rug. Lighting served as the heartbeat of this shoot: a cool overall color temperature with a key light slanting from the upper left to simulate moonlight, harmonizing with the glowing round moon outline and dim blue tones in the background. Subtle floating motes—resembling fireflies or drifting snowflakes—were incorporated to heighten the tranquil, mystical atmosphere.
For posing, I maintained hooded, downcast eyes with a calm expression, deliberately avoiding direct eye contact with the lens. One hand rested lightly above the strings while the other supported the instrument body, simulating playing or quiet contemplation. While seated, the high slit displayed the leg lines to complement the black leather gloves, preserving her aloof grace while delivering striking visual tension to leave a lasting impression.
Though physically demanding, bringing a character from a Role-playing game into physical reality was immensely rewarding. Translating my personal interpretation into fabric, props, and lighting is the greatest joy of Anime cosplay and creating an Ancient style photoshoot.
