It's rare for me to re-organize the costume, makeup, and props for this Xiao Wu look; it has been lying in my hard drive since the shoot. Looking back today, I felt that a few of the dynamic action captures have a great vibe.
The plain white background of this studio portrait environment is actually highly demanding on makeup and styling details. The entire costume utilizes a large area of white pearlescent fabric combined with silver-grey embossed metal pieces. Paired with light purple semi-transparent streamers, it highlights both the bright reflections of the metal and the lightness of the gauze skirt against a pure white backdrop.
The cutout design on the chest and the cinched waist accentuate the silhouette beautifully, while the silver bracers and spiral patterns on the legs add a touch of mecha sci-fi vibe. For the makeup, I tried a clean, clear matte look, which, together with the silver forehead ornament and pinkish-purple rabbit ears, provides a high level of detail accuracy. The wig chosen was a gradient deep brown long straight hair. Under this strong studio lighting, the hair strands are distinctly layered, though it took quite a while to style and fix them for a flowing effect during the wig styling process.
During the shoot, we chose two poses with stark contrasts. The first is a low-center-of-gravity defensive forward-dash posture, utilizing the swinging long hair and dynamic streamers to enhance the sense of speed. This kind of wind-blown action capture demands not only a fast camera shutter speed but also high accuracy in instant light capture. The second pose tries a balanced stance with a single-leg high lift. To reflect the character's lightness and agility, the waist bears a lot of force; standing on one leg requires keeping the skirt flared out while controlling the balance on high heels, which demands significant core strength.
The silver-thread spiral decorations on the white thigh-high stockings and the details of the silver metallic heels look very textured under this clean white lighting. The reflective metal parts are neither overexposed nor too dark, with the contrast carefully controlled. As an action-oriented studio portrait, without complex large-scale props, it focuses more on the costume's tailoring and the presentation of the character's demeanor. Post-processing mainly involved adjusting the brightness of the metallic parts and the color saturation of the skirt, without excessive retouching, preserving some of the original muscle lines to give the image a realistic sense of strength.
When shooting this originally, I wanted to create a set of action showcases. Looking back now, this simple and clean pure white layout is actually very enduring, preserving all the material details that the outfit should have. Although the weapon part doesn't appear, the burst of energy from the body language successfully conveys the character's combat atmosphere. Combined with the pure white background, the purple gauze skirt and silver armor form a wonderful cool-and-warm visual contrast, making it a set with a very satisfying overall level of completion. However, when shooting this kind ofๅฅๅพ (set of photos) requiring large dynamic movements, the early preparation must be thorough. Especially with outfits featuring streamers and high heels, it's very easy to slip while capturing actions on the floor, so the movements were planned in advance and fully communicated with the photographer.
For this look, I particularly love the design that blends the silver metallic feel with the flowing elegance of the gauze skirt. When shooting action photos, the biggest fear is the costume hindering movement or the texture failing to show. Fortunately, the elasticity and structure of this outfit left enough room for movement; whether squatting or standing on one leg, the stitching of the clothes didn't bind up. The rabbit ear headband was also securely fastened without shifting during large movements, and the makeup remained quite intact.
Overall, this set is more about showcasing the character's innate energetic yet independent temperament rather than purely relying on green screens or post-processing special effects to build an atmosphere. The simple, solid-colored background makes every detail of the action clearly visible. When selecting photos in post-processing, I also leaned toward those with more extended body language, hoping to convey the emotions expressed purely through action tension without relying on external objects. This makes it a great addition to my anime cosplay records of this classic Chinese animation character.
