[Castorice Cosplay] Moon Shadow of Honkai: Star Rail, Elegance in Serenity

Getting straight to the point, the final set of photos for this Castorice cosplay is officially ready. I'm quite satisfied with the overall atmosphere and lighting in this shoot. The whole look was inspired by the character's deep and ethereal aura in the game, so for the studio set, we specially chose a pure white base paired with light purple projection lighting on Roman columns.

Let's talk about the outfit first. This white-to-purple gradient gown was quite a test for lighting control during the shoot. The fabric has a pearlescent sheen, and if the light is too harsh, it creates cheap-looking glare. So I had the photographer use softboxes along with large reflectors to brighten the ambient diffuse reflection, achieving that translucent radiance like dew under moonlight. The ruffled hem of the skirt and the drape of the coat needed constant adjusting, otherwise it could easily look bulky. The long black gloves paired with the neck choker serve as visual anchors, keeping the bright white primary color scheme from losing depth. I intentionally posed my hands softly crossed over my chest, accompanied by a slight tilt of the head, hoping to recreate the character's unique demeanor—seemingly distant yet inviting.

As for the makeup, to match the white and grey-purple wig, I ditched high-saturation eye shadows in favor of layering light purple and silver-grey shimmer. The main focus was deepening the eye contours and defining the under-eye area, giving the eyes a sharp yet cool aura. For the lips, I used a matte dusty rose, keeping it subtle while preserving facial dimension. The wig styling was another major focal point—the complex thorn crown and blooming flower accessories on top required fine wire fixing, combined with styling the hair curls to look cohesive without being messy.

The biggest challenge during the shoot was actually balancing the set elements. We needed to find harmony between the elegant, flowing drapery and the rigid stone pillars, while naturally integrating the violets and vines on the right so they didn't look like plastic props. We adjusted the floral arrangements at least three times on site, placing tall flower branches atop the pillars while using low, lush hydrangeas and pinkish-white roses on the ground as foreground accents to create depth in the composition. I also repeatedly adjusted my posture to keep my back straight, because the outfit's center of gravity is higher up; without an upright posture, it would easily look slouched or tired on camera. The pose in the final shots with hands clasped together was a carefully chosen middle ground to relax my shoulders while maintaining an elegant posture.

As for post-processing color grading, instead of overly exaggerated saturation and high contrast, I opted for low-saturation cool tones. I kept the background walls and drapes within a greyish-white and Morandi color range, while separately boosting warmth and brightness on skin tones. This highlights the subject while matching the bittersweet yet beautiful aesthetic of the original work, adding a sense of quietude and storytelling.

Looking back at the shooting day, although it was exhausting, seeing how every fold and every light and shadow accent in the final photos perfectly conveys my understanding of the character brings a huge sense of accomplishment. It's not about achieving absolute perfection, but about faithfully restoring the character with heart. This cosplay photography experience gave me fresh insights into managing high-fashion style characters, making it a deeply fulfilling creative endeavor.
