[Ruan Mei cosplay] Exploring Tranquil Beauty in the World of Honkai: Star Rail

Preparing for this Ruan Mei cosplay set from Honkai: Star Rail actually took a lot of thought from material selection to the official photoshoot. The biggest difficulty with this blue-and-white Chinese-style cosplay outfit was fabric selection and tailoring. The white fluttering sleeves and ruffles on the upper body needed a structured yet lightweight chiffon for support, ensuring a fluffy silhouette while conveying that ethereal grace with inner strength. The pink bow and jade accessories on the chest served as visual highlights for the upper body, balancing out the cool tone of the white and blue-teal colors.

For the blue-teal skirt on the lower body, the embroidery details were intricate, and adjustments were made to the tailoring proportions to prevent exposure or shifting during movement. The white lace arm guards paired with the teal long glove, plus the custom white pearl thigh strap, though small individual accessories, immediately elevated the character's full atmosphere once worn. Simple black pointed high heels with lace ankle trims elongated the leg lines, making the overall posture look more slender.

For makeup on shoot day, we eschewed heavy colors in favor of a clear, atmospheric look. Low-saturation lotus pink and earth tones created soft eye shadow transitions, emphasizing elongated eyeliner and curled lashes to soften eye sharpness and highlight a subtle "innocent" and "quiet" feel. The hairstyle used black hair as the base with gradient teal highlights at the ends to echo the blue-teal outfit. White pearl flower hair accessories on top added layering and a refined Chinese-style flair.

As for the Ruan instrument prop in hand, the details were crafted exceptionally well. The moon phase pattern and gold geometric borders on the body, along with pink cherry blossom branches adorning the head and body, made it feel less like a mere prop and more like an extension of her personality. During the shoot, I deliberately adjusted the angles of my arms and the instrument to create a natural sense of belonging with body lines rather than holding it stiffly.

The set design for this shoot was also interesting; instead of a traditional pure white or black studio, we used wooden flooring and white plush rugs, backed by solid wood fences, vintage mahogany chests, and a warm-toned paper lantern featuring calligraphy. This vintage-inspired set perfectly matched Ruan Mei's scholar-like air of living secluded from the world, immersed in her research. Large-scale soft light and diffuse reflection gave the frame a hazy filter-like texture without harsh shadows, rendering skin tones clear and translucent.

Looking back at these photos, what satisfies me most is her inner demeanor. In Honkai: Star Rail, Ruan Mei possesses her own unique logic and quiet magnetism. In my performance, I avoided forced outward expressions, capturing an effortless relaxation through lowered gazes, natural wrist placements, and relaxed sitting poses. The four photos explored different angles and hand gestures—some focusing on leg line extension, others on interaction with the Ruan instrument prop, and one close-up dedicated to facial expression. Balancing quietness and movement is often the most challenging aspect of cosplay, requiring careful examination of the original work's style and character core to bring flat images to life.
