[Saber Alter cosplay] Fate/Grand Order Summer Pool cosplay "Boot Camp" Record

The poolside "boot camp" session at the anime convention was truly a major test of physical stamina—standing under the blazing sun by the edge of the pool for a long time while constantly dodging tourists wandering into the frame. To fit the atmosphere of the Fate/Grand Order summer event, I chose Saber Alter's cutout Black swimsuit look. That black outfit created an intense visual contrast against the deep azure pool background. The asymmetric cutouts across the chest and the black frills aligned far better with Saber Alter's cold, slightly tsundere demeanor than a purely decorative swimsuit. For the wig, I used a thinned-out short blonde wig with bangs just brushing over the eyes, paired with light grey colored contacts and rosy lips. I deliberately deepened the eye sockets in makeup, attempting to recreate that expressionless, disdainful, and aloof look from the original anime.

To capture a satisfying high-angle selfie perspective, I raised my phone and tested angles multiple times. The perspective of a wide-angle lens easily makes the head look disproportionately large compared to the body, so dropping the shoulders was essential to balance proportions, all while managing the white popsicle prop in hand to avoid obscuring facial features or looking stiff. Under direct outdoor sunlight, the glare was blinding; to avoid harsh shadows, I made subtle adjustments to head angles based on the light source so no awkward shadow patches formed on camera. The makeup artist put a lot of effort into setting the makeup beforehand: since sweating easily causes makeup breakdown, a double layer of setting spray and loose powder was applied, which kept my facial complexion remarkably stable in later shots. Throughout the process, I stayed completely tense to maintain the character's signature aloof aura, though I was already feeling dizzy from the heat. In between shots, I hurried to drink water and reapplied two coats of sunscreen spray before continuing.

To find a less crowded shooting spot, we walked around more than half of the pool and quickly seized an empty corner to shoot with high efficiency. Looking at the shimmering water reflections and the curious glances of passersby, this intense, boot-camp-like shoot under the scorching sun was exhausting yet possessed a unique charm. Frankly, unconventional scenarios like this test a cosplayer's mastery over character aura even more—without background distractions, everything relies on eye contact and subtle movements to convey expression, making it an unforgettable experience. In crowded convention venues, learning to use lens focal lengths to crop out messy backgrounds—such as angling slightly upward or focusing down toward the water—ensures a clean frame. Although physically drained from this Japanese anime convention trip, seeing the final photos faithfully recreate a beloved character brings genuine fulfillment.
