[Jeanne d'Arc cosplay] White Jeanne in the Retro Tavern

This Jeanne d'Arc cosplay photo set was shot in a Retro tavern setting, primarily utilizing the light and shadow from warm hanging pendant lamps and the wooden bar counter to build the atmosphere. Since the bar space was relatively compact, in framing our composition, we maximized perspective and depth of field, using side-backlighting to illuminate the edges of the hair, giving the blonde locks a translucent glow. The styling for this shoot was a vintage costume in blue, white, and gold; to stay true to the character design, the positions of the belt, leg garter, and stockings were adjusted. The texture of the white tall boots paired with fur trims demands a lot for flattering leg lines. Because it features a midriff-baring top with detached long sleeves, wearing them required constant angular adjustments to avoid loosening; with multiple necklace chains, securing everything took considerable time and placed high demands on body posture during the shoot without allowing for large movements. The hairstyle was long blonde hair paired with blue eyes, creating a contrast through cool-toned gazes within a warm-toned environment; the makeup needed to stay clean to prevent melting from the heat of the lighting.

Sitting on the edge of the bar during the shoot, with one hand lifted to touch the headpiece and the other supporting on the countertop—though somewhat tiring, this pose effectively elongated the waist-to-leg proportions, accentuating the details of the White stockings and leg straps. Under on-site lighting, white fabric easily reflects light, so the texture of the tall boots needed side-backlighting to stand out, while using wine bottles on the counter as blurred foreground elements added depth to the image. In post-processing, skin tones were rendered translucent while preserving the overall vintage dark tones, minimizing any excessive plastic texture. Throughout the shooting process, by constantly adjusting the light angles and heights, rim light from the wine bottles was cast into the background, making the scene richer in depth.

For the interpretation of Jeanne d'Arc, I leaned toward showcasing her holy purity and composed elegance, so movements were subtle and expressions rather reserved, focusing on conveying the tranquility through her gaze. Because maintaining seated poses for a long time places high demands on leg strength, we took several breaks in between, but the overall outcome of the final photos was extremely satisfying. The costume fabric has a certain weight, especially the metal accessories, which make a slight clinking sound when walking in a quiet indoor environment—another detail to manage during shooting. Beforehand, the placement of accessories was verified repeatedly to ensure correct wear on both hands, and the wig was tried on in advance to trim the bangs to the right length.

The entire shoot was conducted under warm tungsten lights. Such lighting presents challenges for faithfully capturing makeup and costume colors, requiring precise white balance settings to avoid color casts; for instance, reflector boards had to be used sparingly so as not to ruin the original ambient mood. When selecting final photos, I felt a full-body seated composition best showcased the overall costume design, especially combining the boot silhouette with ambient light, which is why it was chosen as the cover. During multi-angle shooting, constant attention was paid to chin and shoulder positions to prevent costume lines from distorting due to body motion. The photographer's pacing was very steady, showing me playback after each set to adjust lighting angles in real-time to complement the garment texture.

We initially thought a Retro tavern backdrop would easily yield atmosphere, but it actually required strict light control because glass bottles in the background produced numerous reflections and cluttered light patches. After several attempts, we finalized this direct tungsten-bulb lighting plan. Beyond skin retouching, post-production cleaned up background clutter so attention remained focused on the subject. Additionally, highlights and shadows on the clothing were specially treated, giving the white fabric an elegant, slightly desaturated muted-gray premium texture under warm lighting. I hope this presentation allows everyone to feel the character's unique charm in this specific setting.
