The three-person group shoot we just finished really fully brought out the Astral Express Crew atmosphere of Honkai: Star Rail. This time, I was lucky enough to team up with Danhuang and Mochen, who played Dan Heng and the Trailblazer respectively. Together with my March 7th, the feeling of the three of us cooperating in front of the camera was amazing. From wig styling and trimming to costume accessory details, we all did our best to recreate the essence of our respective characters. The black choker around the neck paired with a blue bow on the collar of my jacket is a major visual signature of March 7th, and I specifically used a light color palette for the makeup to highlight the character's lively vibe.
Actually, the shooting process was quite interesting. The first picture was taken in a storage room piled with various props and cardboard boxes. Although the environment was a bit cluttered, it perfectly set up that behind-the-scenes atmosphere right before we set off. I made a classic peace sign right at the front of the frame, and Danhuang and Mochen behind me entered the shot with great chemistry, freezing the relaxed vibe of the trio in this snapshot. The second set of photos was shot inside a car; although that image is a top-and-bottom stitch, what we wanted to express was precisely those daily moments of sharing a car ride during a journey. I especially want to mention that to ensure safety, we only unbuckled our seatbelts for the pose when the vehicle was stationary and on a closed road section—there are countless roads, but safety comes first.
In terms of composition, this kind of three-person group photo is a true test of positioning. I lowered the camera body slightly so the frame could capture the different expressions of all three characters while preventing anyone from being marginalized. For instance, in the in-car photo, I chose a playful expression winking and making a peace sign, while Danhuang's chin-resting posture and Mochen's smile filled the whole photo with a sense of narrative. Regarding post-processing, we mainly adjusted the environmental color temperature. Because the light atmospheres of the warehouse lighting and the natural light inside the car were vastly different, we neutralized the warm and cool color differences to keep the skin tones looking natural and radiant, restoring the texture the characters should have.
The fun of doing cosplay lies in everyone gathering together because they love the same work, using the lens to freeze-frame the vitality of those 2D characters in the 3D world. This submission is also part of my participation in the Creator Incentive Program, as I wanted to share this love for Honkai: Star Rail and the Astral Express Crew members. Every time we shoot outdoors, we hope to stay as close as possible to the characters' personalities. March 7th is inherently a lively and outgoing "Express mascot," so I basically maintained a natural state in front of the camera without intentionally forcing any exaggerated poses. Dan Heng's melancholy and the Trailblazer's casualness were also accurately captured by Danhuang and Mochen.
Compared to the staged final photos, I actually enjoy the process of doing casual cosplay with friends much more. The shooting time that day wasn't long, but the results exceeded expectations. As the "person behind the lens" for my own set of photos, I am very satisfied with the final presentation of the images. It not only restored the characters but also preserved our true states as cosplayers. This is our Astral Express Crew's happy hour, recording these brief moments belonging to our stellar journey.
