This Moria Ruruka swimsuit photoshoot was chosen to take place in an outdoor pool at night, mainly aiming for that cold-and-warm contrasting light and shadow atmosphere. With the night as a natural dark background, paired with the blue-green reflections on the pool surface, it perfectly matches the tranquility this set of photos wants to present. To get close to the character's traits, I put a lot of thought into the wig, finally choosing a light grayish-gold medium-long wig, deliberately fixing the iconic ahoge on top of the head with hairspray, and accessorizing it with a black bow. In terms of makeup, to match the nighttime waterfront environment, the base makeup pursued a clear and fair look, the eye makeup used pink-purple contact lenses, strengthening the lower eyelashes and pink blush, making the character look like she carries a hazy, dreamy feel.
The clothing is a black-and-white color-blocked lace dress-style swimsuit with very rich details. The upper body is thin black spaghetti straps, with white ruffles pieced at the chest, tied with a thin black bow in the middle. The lower body is a black short-skirt-style swim bottom with layers of white lace ruffles, with a huge bow decoration on each side (the first photo used light purple, later changed to white). The neck is paired with a thin gold chain hanging a delicate purple small pendant, adding a bit of bright color to the overall black-and-white matching outfit.
The shooting process was more tiring than imagined. Standing in the water, the water temperature and current resistance made it hard to keep the body balanced, and I also had to wear semi-transparent white stockings, presenting a faintly visible texture underwater. The first picture is standing sideways in the water, hands clenched into fists in front of the chest, eyes looking straight at the lens, showing a slightly guarded and lively feel. The second picture adopts an overhead shooting angle, arms slightly spread to both sides, body as if floating on the water surface; although this picture has soft focus applied, paired with the water ripples, it has an unexpected atmospheric feel. The third picture moved to the white lounge chair at the edge of the pool, legs bent and close together, feet close to the lens, one hand supporting behind, gaze lowered. This posture can better showcase the lines of the whole body and the layers of the skirt, with light hitting from the side, outlining both the skin texture and leg contours.
Shooting by the pool at night, the biggest challenge is light source control. Flashes and continuous fill lights need to be well coordinated to capture the details of the water ripples without overexposing the character's face. To shoot this set of photos well, I communicated with the photographer for a long time in advance regarding lighting techniques. If lighting is not done well in the night pool, the character easily blends into the darkness, but if the light is too harsh, it looks stiff. We tried placing a warm-colored light behind the character's side-rear, and used a softbox for fill light right in front, which can make the pool surface ripple with light while ensuring the clarity of facial makeup.
Moving in the water wearing this outfit is actually somewhat inconvenient; the lace gets heavy after absorbing water, and the skirt hem sticks to the legs, so every movement needs careful adjustment to keep the skirt hem as fluffy as possible. When shooting the overhead shot in picture 2, I needed to tilt my head back, stretch my body backward as much as possible, and spread my arms to find balance. The photographer stood on a high platform shooting downward, with water ripples swaying beneath me—that sense of weightlessness was quite magical. For the sitting pose in picture 3, actually, I felt a bit cold after standing in the water for too long, and sitting on the cushion relaxed me instead, naturally capturing that lazy state. The close-up of the feet and the pairing with white stockings were also intentionally designed to add a bit of visual layering. I really like the one sitting on the cushion this time; the posture is relatively relaxed, and paired with the black and white skirt outfit, it brings out a bit of a lazy vibe. As a cosplay attempt, I tried my best to restore Moria Ruruka's temperament combining a bit of coolness with cute softness. Overall, this Moria Ruruka swimsuit has very exquisite details, from the lace ruffles to the selection of bows. Being able to complete this cosplay photoshoot in a comfortable environment and record the unique light and shadow of the night pool was a very pleasant experience.
