Choosing Shiroko Sunaookami's swimsuit look for this seaside photoshoot was simply because I felt the fresh black, white, and blue color scheme perfectly fits the summer vibe. The black one-piece swimsuit with bright blue accent lines, combined with the signature light blue halo on my head, strengthens the character's cool yet cute image when facing the real waves and beach. Managing the wig was a small episode during the shoot. The sea breeze was incredibly strong; my beast ears and hair strands got messed up several times. To restore the character's fluffy silver-gray short hair, I had to frequently adjust my bangs and sideburns mid-shoot. However, the strong wind had its perks; the few stray hairs captured in the breeze actually added an unexpected dynamic feel to the frame. Especially that moment of looking down to tuck my hair—that kind of casually captured relaxed vibe is often hard to achieve when deliberately posing.
The shooting location was selected in the shallow water area of the beach. Stepping on the wet, unstable sand with waves surging one after another, I had to constantly watch my feet to stabilize my center of gravity. Because the seawater washed over repeatedly, the photographer could only seize the moments when the waves receded to press the shutter. The reflections on the water surface were both an advantage and a challenge; although they could reflect the clear blue sky, a slight lack of attention could easily overexpose parts of the frame.
When it comes to post-processing, I used Pixelfun (Pixelcake) to enhance the anime aesthetic of the images. Specific effect options like \"anti-gravity hair\" and \"mist\" allowed us to digitally present a fantasy feel that is hard to capture perfectly with the naked eye, based on the raw shots. The color of the seawater in the raw files was actually darker than in the final photos. Thanks to the editing tool, we reasonably brightened the environmental tones while maintaining the character's skin tone, making the scene look more clean and bright. Selecting effects like \"weapon glow\" was to make the halo on my head look more pure amidst the sea breeze, but I remained restrained with the parameters to keep it from overwhelming the subject, maintaining the overall natural look of the picture.
In terms of character portrayal, Shiroko herself is a restrained character with strong initiative. Standing by the sea in a swimsuit, there's no need to deliberately express emotions. Just flowing with the rhythm of the waves, looking down at the foam, or quietly looking at the lens yields a much better result than forced posing. For instance, that moment of leaning forward slightly and putting my hand to my forehead to block the sun was actually my instinctive reaction to the strong natural light, which was luckily captured by the camera, becoming a genuine snapshot of emotion.
This cosplay photoshoot also includes various compositional perspectives to showcase the character. Besides front-facing shots and half-body close-ups, I also tried taking back views. The angle of walking towards the waves while holding a small white fish prop was intended to convey a sense of serenity immersed in the water. For lighting, we didn't use complex setups, relying mainly on the natural sunlight of a sunny afternoon. Standing by the water, the light illuminated me evenly, with the backlit sea and sky as the background, creating a clear and bright effect.
Regarding this shooting experience, I think knowing how to get into character when shooting outdoors is crucial. There are many distractions on the beach—the sound of surging waves, the wind, and surrounding tourists. To maintain the character's cool detachment that feels detached from daily life, one needs to actively block out these noises and perceive the temperature and environment as the character herself. Just a single moment of distraction could make the expression in the photo look out of character.
The makeup this time was chosen to be clean and natural, without heavy embellishment, mainly to match the refreshing feeling of the summer waterside. Paired with custom-made beast ears and halo accessories, all elements together constructed the impression of Shiroko removing her serious mask on holiday and enjoying a carefree time by the sea. The fit of the swimsuit was very reasonable, causing no restraint even when walking repeatedly on the beach, which reduced a lot of tension in my expressions and movements. Comparing the final cuts with the scene, I can indeed feel the unique expressiveness generated by stacking the outdoor environment with the character's traits. Those photos taken against the sea breeze actually hold a layer of fresh vitality that studio shoots can't match.
