Bringing this Sangonomiya Kokomi photoshoot from Genshin Impact to life demanded meticulous care from preliminary planning to staging. Striving to capture that underwater ambiance—which, unlike the harsh clarity of the surface world, brings a quiet stillness to the mind—we explored numerous iterations across set design and lighting.
First, addressing wardrobe, hair, and makeup: the wig features a soft gradient shifting from pale blonde to pastel azure, crowned on both sides with three-dimensional, deep purple fin-shaped ornaments. For cosmetics, eye details were enlarged and paired with gentle facial flushing to create that airy, living anime presence on camera. The dress balances a palette of blue, white, and purple, featuring an off-shoulder silhouette anchored by a massive blue-and-white striped ribbon bow across the chest, with sleeves tiered in pleated purple-and-white ruffles. A black lace choker accented with a deep blue teardrop gemstone completed the neckline with rich textural precision. On the lower half, I wore white Stockings; because this fabric easily triggers harsh specular glints under multi-directional studio lights, we treated the base layer and surface finish in advance, ensuring the leg contours looked clean and translucent before the lens.
The set was primarily constructed from faux sakura blossoms and rugged rock boulders layered over a wooden platform. For lighting, a cool cyan ambient light was cast across the background boulders to simulate the mysterious depths of the ocean floor, while the subject's face was warmed with soft fill light. This cool-and-warm chromatic separation allowed the figure to separate naturally from the set.
In posing design, I explored distinct emotional states. Sitting on the wooden platform with hands clasped across my lap looking directly into the camera required breathing softly, channeling calm focus through the gaze. In the second pose, lightly caressing my cheek and hair while angling slightly away from the lens aimed for relaxed, languid ease. Another frame captured me turning toward a bouquet of pink blossoms in hand, showing a side profile beneath cascading petals to freeze a melancholic, introspective beat.
Perching on rocky crags in this attire for hours was hardly comfortable, particularly as the ruffled cuffs creased easily and required diligent smoothing between takes. Yet seeing the serene stillness emerge on camera made every physical strain worthwhile. As a cosplayer, rather than leaning into dramatic exaggeration, I aimed to convey a sense of restrained, internal strength. Stripping away grand gestures, relying solely on eye contact and subtle fingertip nuances was my way of embodying that unyielding calm amidst dark ocean undercurrents. The shoot unfolded without commotion; the entire crew honored a quiet rhythm, allowing this atmospheric serenity to inhabit every frame organically. This production gave me a fresh perspective on storytelling through environmental light and shadow.
