When shooting this Modernia cosplay, the issue that gave the photographer the biggest headache was that massive mechanical wing setup and the base. Without any ready-made props in hand, we could only bite the bullet and go for it. For the first photo, we tried a sitting pose; although it was filled with atmosphere, the high-and-mighty sense of oppression that Modernia has was still a bit lacking. We kept looking for a balance in the next few angles, because without the support of physical props, the character easily appeared thin. It wasn't until we shot this standing pose in the fourth photo that we finally captured the desired vibe.
Look at the fourth picture; those two intersecting dark geometric color blocks in the background were made by us temporarily using cardboard and spray paint, just to visually extend the spatial feel of the backdrop and, by the way, echo the style of the original setting. During the shoot, I emphasized to the photographer many times that we needed to use a slightly lower, low-angle perspective to highlight the character's sense of control and aura. Meanwhile, to make up for the regret of not having actual wings equipped, we placed the focus of the shoot on the details of the Mecha Musume setting: the black-and-red skin-tight armor, the mechanical structure texture on the thighs, and that cable with a sense of electric current behind the back. If these details weren't shot clearly, it would truly be a waste of this combat suit.
A lot of thought also went into the post-processing. To merge with the dark gray background, we deliberately lowered the brightness of the ambient light during color grading, while heavily emphasizing the orange-red highlights of the mecha parts and the contours of the character's face. Looking at that bit of reflection on the collar and shoulders in the fourth picture, along with the arc of the white hair strands blown by the wind, it finally has that cool tension with a hint of mechanical feel and Cyberpunk vibe.
Although we didn't have the original's massive mechanical wings and heavy base, and could only rely on storyboarding and post-production to make up for the blank space in the scene, placing the focus on conveying movements and expressions this time counts as leaving a special record for this character. As a player who loves challenging high-difficulty settings, being able to achieve this effect purely through set-building and creativity has made both the photographer and me highly satisfied with this Anime cosplay log.
