Bringing Surtr to life this time involved delving deep into the details during preparation. As one of my absolute favorite operators in Arknights, I truly wanted to capture her signature aloof, taciturn demeanor backed by undeniable combat prowess.
When it came to the wig, Surtr's iconic crimson hair proved quite challenging. I chose a wig with intense color saturation. While styling, I focused heavily on feathering the wisps across the forehead to eliminate blunt stiffness, creating a touch of airy disarray for a more natural look. I also repeatedly adjusted the length of the side tendrils to frame my face flatteringly while preserving her sharp, clean edge without feeling bulky.
For makeup, I moved away from overly cutesy, wide-eyed anime styles in favor of eyes reflecting distance and dignified haughtiness. Violet contact lenses served as the soul of this look. I deepened the outer corners with reddish-brown shadows to elongate the eye shape, paired with lashes that were lush yet individually defined. A touch of fine shimmer on the lower lids enhanced dimensional depth, while full classic red lips with softly blurred edges imparted refined texture.
The wardrobe and accessories were undoubtedly the centerpiece. For the headpiece, black stylized horns were paired with purple ribbons; I specifically sought accents with gilded florals and cascading metallic charms, as a convincing metallic finish was essential. Layered necklaces around my collarbone created an opulent vintage touch, with the central red gem catching brilliant highlights under the strobes. For the shoot, I also prepared long, slender nude nails paired with a ruby ring, which effortlessly elevated hand gestures and enriched compositional detail.
The set centered around a palette of crimson, black, and gold. Velvet drapery, gilded openwork screens, golden birdcages, and red roses combined instantly to evoke a lavish gothic atmosphere. Throughout the shoot, I constantly channeled her quiet yet intimidating presence—someone of few words whose single glance commands respect. Whether resting a hand near my lips or tilting my chin slightly toward the lens, the goal was balancing ethereal detachment with subtle, poised hostility.
Regarding fabric choices, I selected a deep violet off-the-shoulder piece with a subtle sheen; combined with flared sleeves, it produced striking specular highlights on camera while accentuating my neck and collarbones. Crafting the headwear took notable effort—it needed to remain rock-steady while delivering crisp, sharp silhouettes from every perspective.
To complement this vintage gothic theme, we designed directional lighting where the key light struck from a high side angle, deepening facial shadows and carving out bone structure. The background was dialed down, keeping only the contours of the golden screen and red roses visible. When posing, I deliberately engaged my back and shoulders to maintain a poised, elegant tension. Lightly brushing a finger against my cheek or near my lips added narrative depth to each frame.
The entire shoot tested both physical endurance and concentration. The weight of the horns and heavy necklaces, combined with the need to sustain crisp posture and an unyielding gaze, was no small feat. Yet seeing that familiar yet reimagined figure in the final proofs made every bit of effort worthwhile. The camera captured countless cherished moments that matched the Surtr in my imagination. I hope this series lets everyone feel her unique allure.
