[Sakuya Izayoi Cosplay] Touhou, Frozen Moments of a Retro Gothic Style Maid

After sorting through the raw photos of this set, I decided to pick out a few satisfying ones to share. This time, shooting Sakuya Izayoi from the Touhou Project series, the overall planning focus was placed on the fusion of a Retro Gothic and dark fairytale atmosphere. These pictures were taken in a European-style study scene realistically built inside a studio, including crimson velvet curtains, a carved wooden fireplace, a grandfather clock, and a vintage cabinet; even small items like the gramophone and candlesticks were perfectly coordinated, hoping to restore the character's mysterious temperament inside the mansion.

Regarding the clothing, this maid outfit with a blue, white, and black color scheme indeed features numerous details. The shoulders and sleeve cuffs adopt hollow lace and metal inlay designs, the waistband utilizes gemstone and golden pattern embellishments, and the prints on the skirt are also highly sophisticated. When I first received it, I felt that this tailoring beautifully accentuates the figure, especially the waist-cinching and cuff parts which, paired with the white lace headpiece, maximize the overall visual sense of layering. To match this magnificence, for footwear, a combination of black thick-heeled Mary Jane shoes and skin-toned stockings was chosen, which can both contour the legs and serve as a visual transition under the bright-colored skirt. As for props, a pocket watch, a short sword, and a half-body instructional skeleton were prepared this time; putting these elements together actually carries a strong sense of storytelling.

In terms of pose guidance, I referenced some classic movements. For instance, the shot of sitting on a chair casually swinging the pocket watch with one hand focuses on the relaxation of hand movements and the interaction of the gaze; paired with the contrast between light and dark, the frame looks highly intense. The group holding the short sword emphasizes a combat stance more, requiring natural muscle lines in the arms without shrugging the shoulders; when holding the sword across the front of the body, there needs to be a slight sense of vigilance while still maintaining the elegance that a maid should possess without being too uncouth. Meanwhile, frames holding the skeleton or carrying a teapot lean more toward the playfulness of daily scenes, expressing a subtle incongruity that fuses mystery with everyday life, which serves as a nice way to break the stereotypical image.

This scene in the studio is actually hard to come by. The red windows and old wooden furniture inherently bring a heavy retro filter; light filters through the stained-glass windows onto the character's face, making it easy to capture that cold and quiet aura. For composition, I intentionally chose some shots where the main character is right in the center of the frame or slightly close to the golden ratio position, preserving the sense of space of the grand scene. I feel this location choice added a lot of points to the character; the maid's lace headpiece and the patterns on the sleeves can show up beautifully against the dark-toned background.

However, during the actual shoot and photo delivery, repeatedly adjusting poses is quite physically draining, especially for some static compositions that require total facial relaxation. Controlling things within the right shutter speed and depth of field also requires continuous communication with the photographer regarding angles. But what I am personally satisfied with is the control over the character's demeanor; I didn't deliberately pretend to be cold and aloof but instead brought in a composed yet slightly playful mindset, which fits the calmness and confidence in the character's setting quite well. During post-processing, the focus was placed on preserving the texture of the skin and the structural details of the costume, slightly darkening the shadows to highlight the atmosphere of the scene, making the overall tone of these final cuts quite unified. I still feel a great sense of accomplishment with this work; it stands as a highly satisfying recent attempt at retro restoration in my cosplay photography, and I hope it conveys my unique understanding of this character's setting.
