Slipping into this Red and white shrine maiden outfit, putting on red contact lenses, and holding the red-backed spell card props with white lettering, the lore of Reimu Hakurei from Touhou Project was finally materialized in 2D reality at the World Line Anime Convention. The fabric details of this costume are extensive: vast expanses of red cloth bordered by white cutout lace, alongside golden floral brooches on the sleeves, which exhibited rich texture under the convention venue lighting. In pursuit of fidelity, I chose a long straight black wig with blunt bangs; for the eye makeup, I experimented with a new technique using red eyeliner along the outer corners to pair with large-diameter red lenses, lending my gaze a sharper and more mysterious aura.
Because the red spell cards are relatively large paper props, navigating through the packed convention crowd was a bit tricky, nearly bumping into booth frames several times. The first photo was captured in a well-lit hall aisle while holding up the spell card to dial in the angle; the second frontal close-up happened to catch backlighting, making the skin look remarkably lucid. From starting hair and makeup at 9:00 AM until wrapping up in the afternoon, it lasted around five hours—exhausting, yet deeply rewarding. Walking the floor in this Anime convention cosplay, I met many fellow enthusiasts of the franchise, sharing insights on character designs and prop fabrication.
Given the convention crowds, angling the spell cards slightly to the side in hand better highlighted the overall styling. The composition of the first shot captured my head, torso, hand gestures, and the venue background, making it far more memorable than a plain portrait close-up. Actually, the most laborious part of this costume was the layered white lace; to ensure the lace looked neat without wrinkles, I spent considerable time preheating and ironing it flat, and the final outcome was well worth the effort. Accented with mysterious red eyes and spell cards true to character, the moment the shutter clicked felt like truly stepping into a quiet corner of the ancient Gensokyo. The shoot primarily utilized available ambient light on site, rendering realistic colors with strong visual impact from the red-and-white scheme. When time permits, I hope to shoot an outdoor scene even closer to the Touhou Project atmosphere, pairing refined lighting to bring out the full charm of this universe.
