[Patchouli Cosplay] Touhou Project's Magic Library: Sharing Cozy Convention Photos with Koakuma

This time, paired up with Koakuma, we completed the Magic Book Group convention photos shoot for Patchouli and Koakuma from Touhou Project. This authoritative Koakuma-chan is played by @Lu Lu, and for all the light and shadow capture, special thanks to the photographer @雾雨若叶. Because we wanted to present a lazy reading atmosphere in a magic library, we specifically looked for a dimmer spot in the convention hall, utilizing the live high-position light source for backlit candid captures.

Regarding the makeup and styling this time, Patchouli's iconic purple long hair heavily tested the quality of the wig. To recreate a smooth and voluminous effect, I pre-styled and trimmed the wig multiple times. The hat part features a patchwork of multi-layered lace and pale pink satin ribbons; to echo the puffy sleeves and pearl chains of the dress, I selected accessories within the same color palette to complete the Lolita outfit. In terms of props, a specially customized magic book was crucial—the colorful stone-textured cover and artwork-accurate design served as a massive bonus for the overall styling. There was also that pair of thin-framed semi-rimless glasses resting on the bridge of my nose, which was a key detail to bring out the character's temperament.

For photography, Teacher Muriya Wakaba (@雾雨若叶) is excellent at utilizing live lighting. Those photos everyone sees with a hazy dust feel and highlighted contours were actually completed within a restriction-heavy indoor convention hall. We adjusted the shutter speed and aperture size, allowing the light beams from the high spotlights to fall on the edges of the hair strands, forming a very beautiful golden rim light to construct a dreamlike magic world atmosphere. The pose in the photo where I'm sitting on a high stool with my legs slightly crossed was also to avoid a cluttered background, using the stool's height difference to showcase the layers of the lace leg-warmers and plush slippers underneath the skirt hem. Although the prop book required angle adjustments while flipping pages to avoid reflections, the final photos turned out highly ideal.

Honestly, it's not easy to capture a serene feeling in a noisy environment like a convention, often requiring getting into character instantly without caring too much about the gazes of onlookers. The interaction with Koakuma was primarily built on the mutual understanding of "quietly reading together," ensuring that eye contact and hand placement appeared natural rather than stiff. Overall, it was a highly delightful shooting experience; the costume design guaranteed a certain level of comfort during the event, letting me maintain a relaxed posture for a long time to coordinate with the lighting. Every time I do a roleplay for a Touhou Project character, I hope to recreate their original personality and temperament to the maximum extent, rather than just stopping at the superficial beauty of the clothes. I hope this photo set allows everyone to feel the ease and focus within the magic library.
