The photo set from Day 2 of the AW Beijing Anime Convention at Shougang Park is finally sorted out. This shoot was quite a roller coaster—on the first day, we suffered from strong winds that knocked over and broke my setup light stands. Seeing the damaged equipment on the ground made my heart sink. Learning from that painful lesson, I completely abandoned the idea of setting up lighting arrays on Day 2 and opted to shoot handheld with an AD200p speedlite mounted on camera the entire time.

While it seemed like a compromise, camera-top flashing actually offered remarkable flexibility. Although the sunlight was exceptionally bright on location, the freezing wind was equally merciless. The speedlite allowed me to efficiently overpower the background ambient light and accentuate the subject. Paired with the light blue and white Genshin Impact style outfit, the overall texture turned out surprisingly great. The shooting location this time was Shougang Park, where red brick walls and withered golden grass served as backdrops. It offered both the rugged toughness of industrial ruins and the bleak beauty of autumn/winter, creating a high-tension contrast against this lightweight dress adorned with gorgeous lace, fluffy frills, and ribbon bows.

The most unexpected and fun part was during our first photo setup: a super friendly park worker nearby saw us shooting and proactively took out a hose to sprinkle water and add atmosphere for us! The spray catching the sunlight in the air looked absolutely stunning, so I quickly snapped that magical moment. Droplets splashed through the air with an incredible visual effect—definitely the biggest pleasant surprise of this outdoor Event photo sharing session.

Before snapping that water spray photo, however, everyone was already freezing. Shougang Park is far more open than downtown urban areas, and whenever a gust blew through, the model girl in her thin dress got goosebumps all over her legs. Wearing white stockings, a multi-layered light blue chiffon dress, and a styled wig, she stood in the freezing wind with a flush on her cheeks, yet remained immensely professional in assisting me with angles and poses. The moment she heard the shutter click during shooting, she would instantly adjust her expression to enter character mode. I am truly grateful for her professionalism.

When taking cosplay event photos outdoors, convention venues are often crowded and cluttered, whereas Shougang Park offers wide-open space. I controlled the speedlite output between 1/16 and 1/32 power, which, paired with a wide aperture and fast shutter speed, guaranteed clean facial exposure under backlighting while preserving ambient atmosphere. This light blue and white Genshin Impact style outfit has abundant details—from the black lace at the neckline to the gold-trimmed sash at the waist—all requiring sculpted lighting to shine through.

Although carrying the handheld AD200p all day left my arms sore, looking at these final images made all fatigue and the frustration from Day 1 vanish completely. Light, shadows, water splashes, architectural backdrops, and the model's condition all came together perfectly this afternoon. Perhaps this is the ultimate charm of convention photography: behind every shutter click lies a memory tied to that specific environment.

Experiencing unexpected situations in outdoor environments (like harsh winds or water hose sprinkling) and adapting on the fly actually sparks more creative inspiration than methodical indoor studio shoots. Shougang Park is not just a Beijing Anime Convention location; its heavy industrial style serves as an exceptional backdrop for outdoor creative shoots. Every shutter press in the cold wind recorded the most authentic atmosphere of this convention.
