[Gongsun Li Cosplay] Honor of Kings: Red Hydrangea Interaction Between Gongsun Li and Pei Qinhu

This shoot took considerable preparation, primarily to faithfully recreate the iconic designs of Gongsun Li and Pei Qinhu from Honor of Kings. To match A-Li's signature weapon, I handcrafted this large red hydrangea prop, covering it with textured pleats; to give it visual volume while keeping it lightweight for tossing, I packed the interior with lightweight filler and selected premium satin with an elegant drape for the exterior. For the wig, I picked a vibrant bright orange, trimming the blunt bangs and sideburns cleanly, while reinforcing the animal ears and hair accessories at the crown to prevent wind displacement outdoors. The location was set amidst ancient architecture featuring stone staircases and vermilion-lacquered pillars, leveraging the intense afternoon sun for backlighting to cast radiant rim light along my hair.

The costume details were quite demanding. The white rigid pauldron on the shoulder needed a metallic finish without adding excessive weight, so I sculpted and painted it using EVA foam. The black choker paired with the red-and-white ensemble added a flattering flush to the complexion. For makeup, focus centered around the eyes, blending a soft pinkish-red wash paired with scarlet colored contacts to capture a lively yet razor-sharp, agile gaze. Balancing the color contrast between wardrobe and scenery was a core priority: the fiery orange hair and crimson dress stood out strikingly against the muted gray-green stone background. To keep the frame clean, I dialed down the background saturation during color grading, letting the tactile texture and hues of the subjects take center stage.

The character interaction was by far the most enjoyable part—my partner playing Pei Qinhu and I continually calibrated our gestures and dynamic tension. A red silk ribbon linked us together: he held the hydrangea firmly while I tugged the flowing ribbon on the other end. To prevent the ribbon from tangling into chaos on camera, we adjusted its arc repeatedly to ensure visual tension without pulling it taut and rigid. Mid-shoot, a passing gust lifted our hair, allowing us to seize that remarkably candid, natural moment. The midday sun was dazzling, so we positioned reflectors for side fill, evening out facial illumination while preserving background depth. Navigating the hard stone steps in a voluminous skirt required extreme caution to avoid stepping on the hem. Because the hydrangea was quite large and easily obstructed faces on camera, we tested multiple perspectives, ultimately settling on a side-profile ribbon-pulling composition that displayed the full prop while enriching the spatial depth of the duo's interaction.

Regarding the tactile quality of the styling, A-Li's dress combined multiple textiles: lightweight chiffon for the lining to ensure airy movement, overlaid with jacquard satin bearing subtle woven patterns. The wig was made from heat-resistant synthetic fiber and straightened with a flat iron prior to shooting for a sleek, silky finish. Pei Qinhu's styling leaned into strapping and structured lines, featuring a traditional Chinese mandarin collar and fitted cuffs paired with wrist wraps to convey athletic strength. Standing side by side, one soft and one powerful, the visual balance was harmonious. As someone who frequently cosplays this character, from handcrafting props to refining partner choreography, focusing on every nuance delivered a final result that truly met our expectations.
