[2B Cosplay] NieR:Automata: Bride Styling Under a Single Beam of Light

The final shoot for this "Bride Under a Beam of Light" look designed for 2B cosplay was completed at AXG Studio. From costume fitting to the final photo release, I wanted to share my concept and shooting experience with everyone who loves this character.

Building on the character's original classic design, I hoped to create a major visual subversion. A bride theme is typically associated with purity and romance, but when combined with 2B's combat attributes in NieR:Automata, it couldn't just be a simple, sweet package. I retained the character's iconic silver short hair and black gloves, while transforming the outfit entirely into pure white. The skirt hem and headpiece feature layers of ruffles and breathable lace materials, paired with white lace thigh-high stockings and white high heels, attempting to visually forge a paradoxical feeling—pure and immaculate, yet marked with distinct combat traces.

The prop for this shoot, a giant wide-bladed sword, posed a major challenge. Due to the sword's immense size and heavy weight, holding it single-handedly and posing required significant arm and core strength. We spent a lot of time during the actual shoot adjusting the center of gravity, striving to make the greatsword carry a truly oppressive presence. Particularly for the pose in the first photo—standing on one leg with the other raised high—I had to support my entire body weight on a single foot while maintaining balance within the effective range of the lighting setup. To ensure the skirt billowed naturally in the air, I also adjusted the dynamic movement of the skirt hem numerous times.

Regarding light and shadow, the single beam of cool light in AXG Studio produced a marvelous effect on the pure white materials. The white semi-translucent tulle material took on a delicate, translucent sheen under the light, but this was also a double-edged sword—it placed extremely high demands on the dynamic range of the camera equipment, as poorly handled highlights could easily erase the white tulle's three-dimensional texture. The resulting contrast between light and dark perfectly highlighted the character's cool and aloof aura. This minimal lighting setup was also ideal for emphasizing the character herself, preventing a flashy background from stealing the visual focus.

In terms of action design, I tried my best to navigate the boundary between "gracefulness" and "chilling intensity." Poses like those in photos two and three, holding the weapon raised upward, were actually quite demanding on back and arm engagement; if the sense of power fell short, the props would appear lightweight in the shot, losing their inherent gravity. Personally, I feel that pairing these action designs with the white tulle precisely highlighted the flexibility of the character's body alongside the coldness of the weapon.

Reviewing the makeup and styling this time, I intentionally subtracted elements from the makeup, maintaining a translucent, clean base makeup to echo the pure white attire. In a pure white bride ambiance, overly heavy makeup would disrupt the overall light and airy tone. With the cooperation of AXG Studio, the shooting rhythm was exceptionally well-managed, and the staff were highly professional, helping me deal with issues like the white tulle snagging or getting dirty so I could perform large movements with confidence.

As for the underlying concept of this artwork, I hoped to shape an "unconventional" aesthetic. Although it features a wedding dress symbolizing purity, it wields a heavy sword capable of tearing through enemies. Under this minimalist cool lighting, the intertwining of pure white and darkness further manifests a solemn and sacred atmosphere. Despite the heavy weapon, the shooting atmosphere was wonderful, and these atmospheric cinematic shots retain the recognizability of the original character while granting room for artistic interpretation. This work achieves a clever balance of lightness and weight through costume and prop synergy, and I hope everyone who sees this set can appreciate another side of this character.
