[Swimsuit Seia cosplay] Blue Archive: Summer Shooting Notes at Sanya Beach

This Blue Archive Swimsuit Seia cosplay, shot this April in Sanya, is one of my favorite recent photo sets. The four photos you see were captured by photographer @隅田川千寺 and me under the scorching sun on the beach. There are so many details behind the shoot, so I wanted to compile the key technical takeaways and some fun experiences to share.

First, regarding location choice: the coastline at Sanya beach has a naturally vivid, radiant backdrop that pairs exceptionally well with Seia's white-and-yellow color scheme. We put genuine thought into set building and prop placement. Since this Blue Archive character features a clean, refreshing design, we avoided overly cluttered backgrounds, instead utilizing wooden beach structures, a bright yellow beanbag sofa, and a blue-and-white lifebuoy to evoke an immersive vacation mood. Securing these props on the sand was tricky—especially the yellow beanbag sofa. Because sand shifts constantly, sitting down even slightly distorted my posture, so we had to brace it with wooden boards underneath for support.

We scheduled the shoot for April. Although the weather in Sanya was fantastic, the UV rays were intense. The dazzling sunlight granted the photos a brilliant, translucent high-key look, but also made it difficult to keep my eyes open. To maintain a camera-ready smile, I had to constantly adjust my head angles; facing direct sunlight caused squinting, so I often kept my eyes closed until the exact second the shutter clicked. Fortunately, to highlight the character's traits, our costume coordination worked out nicely: a high-cut white one-piece swimsuit paired with a yellow jacket and platform shoes. This bold color contrast looked crisp and pristine in natural daylight. Although the outfit looked breezy, the materials made it sweltering under the sun, and the yellow-and-white palette drew plenty of insects—a crucial hazard for seaside shoots requiring mosquito repellent on hand at all times.

As for figure framing and lighting—which many are curious about—the photographer deserves huge credit. A telephoto lens was used, which not only compressed spatial depth but also produced a creamy, clean background blur. When shooting near water, managing glare and overexposure is paramount. Since Swimsuit Seia has porcelain fair skin, we specifically adjusted exposure compensation to preserve a translucent skin texture without washing out garment details. Furthermore, the transparent crown headpiece was tough to keep steady in the ocean breeze; I had to sync my gaze and angles to use the wind dynamically to our advantage.

There are many subtle touches worth noticing in the photos. For example, wearing yellow platform shoes on the sand was genuinely painful; every step sank into the sand, requiring immense care during posing. The pink beverage and wire snack basket on the table were repositioned repeatedly to nail that relaxed, afternoon-tea holiday feel by the sea. We specifically waited until 3 or 4 PM, when the sun softened, casting a gorgeous rim and side-backlight across my face.

Regarding post-processing, the color grade was kept luminous, transparent, and consistently fresh. We steered clear of heavy filters, believing that authentic light and shadow best suited this character. The overall quality stemmed from meticulous on-site lighting and color control, paired with delicate highlight rolloff in post. We took countless frames that day, and these four are the curated best. I feel they wonderfully capture the seaside summer indolence and the character's signature playfulness—especially the shot lounging on the yellow sofa, where the lazy ambiance is just right.

Lastly, shooting cosplay is never easy, especially on outdoor location. From early morning hair and makeup to braving the heat and continuously adjusting poses on the beach, these photos represent the joint dedication of both the photographer and myself. I hope everyone appreciates the craftsmanship of the photography itself, and respects our creative effort for this carefully styled character.
