With about two weeks left before school starts, I took advantage of the fine weather over the past few days to finally bring this outdoor sailor suit shoot to life. For location scouting, I intentionally sought out bleachers with painted blue steps and lush park greenery, knowing that a navy blue pleated skirt and white short-sleeved top would pop exquisitely against a cool-toned backdrop.
The sunlight that day was wonderfully cooperative; though temperatures were warm, the dappled patterns filtering through the foliage onto metal handrails delivered precisely the mood I envisioned. The sailor suit featured a classic navy sailor collar paired with a crimson ribbon tie. To elongate my proportions, I coordinated it with knee-high black stockings and chunky-heeled black loafers. The sheer texture of the black stockings subtly caught the sunlight, lending sleek, fluid contours to my legs whether seated on the steps or resting a foot against the rail. Throughout the session, I continuously adjusted my poses—sometimes hugging my knees, sometimes crossing my legs—while the photographer shifted angles to best flatter leg lines.
We brought along a few props to infuse narrative depth, such as a blue-labeled mineral water bottle and a black instrument case. Raising the water bottle to shield against the sun or pretending to unscrew the cap for a sip softened any stiffness, injecting a lively touch of summer campus girl photography. The shots walking down park pathways with the guitar case slung across my back struck a balance between motion and stillness, establishing an evocative aesthetic.
On the gear side, we shot with a Z5II body, packed with Viltrox 35mm F1.8, 55mm F1.8, and 85mm F2 lenses. The 35mm was fantastic for environmental portraits, framing the blue bleachers and lush greens while giving the composition room to breathe; the 55mm, as a standard focal length, delivered remarkably natural half-body seated portraits close to the human eye's perspective; and the 85mm truly shone in the park for moody close-ups and creamy background bokeh, where spatial compression and gentle light orbs elevated the fabric textures of the sailor suit.
Throughout the shoot, we explored numerous interactions—leaning over the green iron railing gazing into the distance, or perching on the wooden bleachers with a playful wink. To catch candid frames, the photographer clicked the shutter continuously while I worked to find my most relaxed presence amidst shifting poses. Occasionally, we paused in place for extended stretches just waiting for a gust of wind to lift my hair or a cloud to soften the harsh glare.
Walking outdoors all afternoon carrying the instrument case and gear bags was physically demanding, but reviewing the playback on the camera screen made every bit of effort feel worthwhile.
