I finally completed this shoot for Mercury Lampe from Rozen Maiden—from preparation to final delivery, the entire journey was both grueling and immensely rewarding. Honestly, I hesitated for a long time before cosplaying this character because Mercury Lampe holds an irreplaceable place in so many hearts. Coupled with her distinctive dark, broken, yet haughty temperament, I was genuinely worried I wouldn't be able to pull it off. Fortunately, Master Yuchen's mastery of light and shadow was absolutely phenomenal, making the whole shoot go seamlessly.
Let's talk about the hair and makeup first. For the wig, I selected a cool ash-white tone, trimming and styling multiple textured layers to give the hair strands a natural flow. The makeup focused heavily on the eyes: wearing red contact lenses, deepening the contours with dark eyeshadow, and pairing them with dark crimson lipstick. I deliberately applied the base foundation paler than usual, aiming precisely for that bloodless, porcelain doll texture. The outfit is a classic black-and-white Gothic Lolita dress; the corset waist cinches tightly, requiring me to hold my breath to maintain that slender, elongated silhouette. While the multi-tiered white lace ruffles on the sleeves are breathtakingly gorgeous, wearing them felt like carrying two large ornaments, easily tangling with the wings on my back at the slightest movement. The lower half was paired with Black stockings, which flatter body proportions wonderfully in the frame.
Props and set styling were another major highlight. The massive black wing props had to be secured across my shoulders and back with harness straps; they carried noticeable weight, so many arm-raising gestures required hidden core strength. The cruciform longsword in my hands possessed great craftsmanship—the bronze-gold hilt guard and the luster of the blade aligned impeccably with that medieval dark knight ambiance. The shoot took place at Chenxing Photography Studio; their mirrored floor was an absolute gem, immediately dialing up the spatial depth of the entire set to the max. Layered with cascading black tulle drapery, gilded birdcages, large white roses, and crystal candelabras, an ethereal yet eerie atmosphere emerged almost effortlessly without needing tedious adjustments.
During the shoot, Master Yuchen arranged an array of contrasting cool and warm lights in the studio. Cool blue beams washed over the background and profile of my face, while warm golden lights were dedicated to rimming hair strands and the white lace sleeves. This high-contrast lighting demanded impeccable facial smoothness and crisp body lines, but yielded extraordinarily dramatic results. Before the camera, I needed to fill the frame using the draped edges of my skirt and the visual tension of the props—such as kneeling inside a wooden frame holding the sword, or turning sideways to spread the wings—while channeling that cold aloofness and detachment in my eyes. Maintaining these poses for extended periods took a heavy physical toll, making every bone ache in protest, but each glimpse at the camera preview made every drop of effort worthwhile.
From deducing movements and expressions through the character's internal logic to faithfully recreating every detail of the costume and props, everyone poured tremendous dedication into this cosplay shoot. Through this set of photos, I hope to convey Mercury Lampe's unique dark beauty and fragile, shattered aesthetic to everyone viewing across the screen.
