[Shenhe & Hu Tao Cosplay] Genshin Impact Annual Photography Retrospective

Browsing through my phone album and revisiting these backlogged photos shot late last year makes me realize how fast time flies. That's perhaps the most fascinating aspect of doing cosplay—using the lens to freeze moments that don't belong to yourself, yet discovering upon organizing the photos that they are brimming with your own genuine emotions.

This set represents my attempts at two Genshin Impact characters: Shenhe and Hu Tao. These two characters, possessing completely contrasting personalities and color schemes, allowed me to experience distinctly different joys during makeup, wig styling, and costume preparation.

Let's start with the Shenhe cosplay look. Her long silver-white hair exhibited wonderful texture under outdoor natural light, and when paired with light blue contact lenses, that aloof serenity in her gaze instantly heightened. The garment's neckline design is exquisitely crafted; traditional frog buttons along the lapel and red braided knot tassels serve as key highlights, while the golden embroidery with a blue gemstone on the chest lends an authentic flavor of traditional Liyue attire. On shooting day, blooming white flowers hung overhead, and as a gentle breeze blew past, that soft interplay of light and shadow amid aloof coldness was precisely the texture I strived to capture for Outdoor photography.

Switching over to the Hu Tao cosplay look, the entire atmospheric vibe shifted completely. Swapping out the silver-white hair for red-brown gradient short locks, putting on vibrant red contact lenses, and topping it off with that black porkpie-style hat adorned with white floral accents immediately infused a playful, quirky charm. Hu Tao's attire centers on deep hues and vivid crimson, where the bright red at the neckline catches the eye, while gold cutout metallic pendants and black braided cords along the lapel remain iconic.

During shooting, I tried to maximize outdoor natural light to craft contrast between highlights and shadows. Navigating shifting outdoor lighting conditions puts the photographer's exposure and framing skills to the test. Without relying heavily on artificial fill lights, that beam of sunlight hitting my face turned into the most authentic filter, rendering crimson eyes livelier and bestowing an airy, spontaneous Outdoor photography feel to the overall frame.

To be honest, every Genshin Impact cosplay effort—from wig trimming and contact lens selection to aligning seam lines and positioning accessories—is never easy. If Hu Tao's hat leans slightly off-angle or a wig gets ruffled by wind, character fidelity suffers. Yet the moment final photos emerge, every hassle and tedious adjustment feels entirely worthwhile. Shenhe's silver hair and Hu Tao's red hair created a vivid color clash at the exact same location, letting me experience the infinite possibilities of character interpretation.

Beyond visual presentation, capturing a character's presence within their environment is paramount. Shenhe standing beneath flowering branches exudes a distant yet grounded composure; Hu Tao sitting among withered grass channels a poetic, unbothered romance and purity. "If it's a dream, why wake up?"—this phrase feels remarkably fitting for such character explorations. Perhaps because we aren't travelers residing in Teyvat, cosplay becomes our pathway to step briefly into their world.

Organizing these archived photos is more than a simple review of past work; it's a validation of the passion invested over the past year. Shooting outdoors brings unexpected surprises—a drifting cloud or a timely gust of wind adds spontaneous magic to planned shoots. While it's slightly regrettable that both looks couldn't be shot within a complete traditional Chinese courtyard setting, the backdrop provided by nature possesses its own innate beauty.

Every makeup upgrade and deeper reflection on character dynamics becomes valuable experience for future shoots—something a long-term enthusiast steadily accumulates. In the new year, I look forward to exploring more diverse styles and launching new projects for Genshin Impact cosplay and other characters. Sharing this passion across the screen is, in itself, a deeply meaningful pursuit.
