[Antiquarian Cosplay] Identity V Antiquarian: Canon Straight-out-of-Camera Front & Behind the Scenes Sharing

With these convention photos, I mainly wanted to share the unedited color performance and sense of space directly from the camera. Many fellow cosplayers ask me in DMs how I handle convention photos, so this time I specifically uploaded a few shots with only light skin retouching and straight-out-of-camera colors for reference.

The gear used for this set was a Canon R5 Mark II with an RF85mm f/1.2 lens; the physical bokeh effect under such a large aperture truly carries immense texture. The messy lighting and backgrounds typical of anime conventions were thoroughly softened into gorgeous bokeh balls by the depth of field at 85mm, making the character stand out completely. I kept the white balance neutral, so the turquoise blue tone of the outfit itself, the mustard gold cuff details, and the vintage gold-thread patterns at the bottom of the skirt were rendered very pleasingly.

I chose Antiquarian's design this time, which carries a rich Traditional Chinese style outfit flair. Looking at the costume itself, the top's white jacquard fabric reveals a subtle texture under the lens rather than a flat, dead white. The cloud motifs on the collar and cuffs, along with the edge piping design, really test a tailor's craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the wave patterns on the skirt hem, paired with the hanging tassel accessories, produce wonderful dynamic movement with body motions whether standing still or posing.

The blue accents on the hair ornaments match the overall white-and-blue palette of the outfit seamlessly, while the long hair and fine braids help frame and contour the face. For makeup, to complement this cool yet sharp traditional vibe, I put extra emphasis on eye contours. Since we only used natural lighting on-site during the shoot, facial shadow transitions turned out smooth and realistic without the plastic look caused by over-smoothing, and the lip color along with slender eyebrow shapes pulled the entire character's demeanor together.

As for posing, besides basic static stances, I added dynamic poses filled with tension. For example, the pose with one leg lifted in the photos not only breaks up the heaviness of the long skirt but also reveals details of the white mid-calf socks and boots, creating a visual breathing space in the overall composition. The shot sitting on the floor stretching out brought body fluidity and grace to the maximum.

It must be noted that convention photos differ vastly from studio shoots; lighting is unpredictable, and attendees are constantly moving through. The photographer needs to seize a relatively clean background in the gaps between crowds while quickly guiding my composition and posing. The RF85mm f/1.2 is remarkably suited for transitioning between half-body and full-body compositions, rendering skin tones and costume colors accurately even in average convention lighting. Through these recent shoots, I've gradually figured out how to utilize lens characteristics and body positioning in noisy convention settings to capture photographs filled with quiet strength.

The layering of the outfit does impose some restraint on body movements—especially with stiff fabric and long skirt hems; standing slouched easily results in a bulky look. Thus, during full-body shots, my weight mostly rests on one leg, with shoulders pushed back and open, using the elevation of holding props to balance visual weight. Reflected in the photos, this core tension and trunk extension actually allow the skirt textures and tassels to flow much more naturally.

As a cosplayer, being able to recreate a favorite look at a convention and record that focused state through the lens is a deeply meaningful experience. Although I didn't engage in heavy background compositing or apply exaggerated filter tones, this raw, authentic recording better aligns with my original intent for this photoshoot—letting viewers see the genuine texture of the fabric and see the real me under the convention lights.
