During the early preparation of this look, just the massive fox tail scenery took a lot of thought. To make it look both voluminous and natural without being too heavy or restricting my movements, I specially compared various faux furs and fillers. The black ear tips on top of my head were also a finishing touch; I tried several coloring methods before finally settling on this natural gradient effect. On the day of the shoot, the studio setup was very exquisite. The floral arrangements on both sides, the hanging bead curtains, and the hand-painted lantern emitting a warm yellow glow together formed a space rich in classical texture. On the antique display shelf made of black wood beside me sat small porcelain bowls and jade-like twigs, which, paired with the jewelry box and tassel pendants on the left, created a rich sense of layering.
In terms of light and shadow, the photographer worked with me to use rim lighting to outline my silhouette, giving the entire tail a soft, faint glow along its fluffy edges, which made the texture in the photos look more three-dimensional. The large fan in my hand was also custom-made. Its red, white, black, and gold color scheme perfectly matches the 3D gold flower decorations and red tassels on the costume, achieving visual color unity overall. The focus of the makeup was on the eyes. To highlight the character's vividness, the outer corners of the eyes were slightly elongated, paired with a natural skin-tone base to avoid heavy makeup that might overshadow the character's inherent temperament. As for the costume, the dark base fabric combined with large areas of gorgeous patterns offered great breathability and drape, allowing me to switch seamlessly between various sitting and standing poses without looking stiff. Every pattern and border on the garment was hand-sewn, with details that can withstand the scrutiny of close-up macro lenses.
During the shoot, I chose to sit on a cushion for a three-quarter side-profile composition, which showcased the massive volume of the tail behind me without obscuring the contours of my face. The folding fan was gently opened, forming a perfect geometric intersection with my body, guiding the viewer's gaze to focus on my face and props. In addition to the elongated eyeliner, my eyebrows were lightened to match the overall subtle yet slightly mysterious color palette. The red tassels of the headpiece hung by my ears, swaying gently as I moved; although static photos cannot capture motion, the visual effect still conveyed that sense of vividness.
Meanwhile, choosing real flowers as foreground embellishments was also a key focus of this shoot. White lilies and red chrysanthemums were blurred out at the bottom of the frame, serving as a framing device to enrich the composition while effectively adding color layers. The porcelain vessels on the black wooden shelf added lifelike details, making the character seem less like a flat 2D drawing and more like someone genuinely living in such a quaint, antique courtyard. For character portrayal, besides the external attire, controlling expressions is equally important. Slightly nodding my head, letting my eyes wander, or focusing on the fan surface—I alternated between these states with each shutter click to find the most natural vibe. This kind of indoor courtyard atmosphere heavily relies on the coordination of scene setup and lighting beforehand. If the light is insufficient, the calligraphy and floral patterns on the hanging curtains won't show details; if it's too bright, it ruins the tranquility of a dusk or candlelight setting. The shooting process was actually quite relaxed and pleasant. My companions helped me adjust my tail and the angle of the fan, and we worked together to complete a set of works that I am quite satisfied with. This shoot was not only a recreation of the character but also an exploration of applying traditional cultural elements in modern photography. Enjoying the fun of immersing myself in the character's state, focusing on the fan in my hand and the emotions conveyed through my eyes, I tried my best to make every final photo carry a sense of storytelling. From finalizing the look to styling all the props and accessories, the preparation took quite a while, but seeing this final visual effect with warm yellow tones and a room full of floral fragrance made all the effort worthwhile. During post-processing, special care was taken to preserve the raw texture and reduce heavy filters, making the light and shadow transitions more natural, ensuring that no detail would overshadow the main subject.
