For this photoshoot of Tingyun's Fugue form from Honkai: Star Rail, extensive pre-production was devoted to capturing that classical, faintly seductive aesthetic in this Ancient style cosplay. The costume features countless layers—a wine-red palette accented with gold piping and various ornate metal accessories—making putting it on a genuine workout. The ruffled cuffs and tiered skirt layers were particularly prone to disarray while moving, demanding constant tidying. The rich fabric carried noticeable weight, exhibiting a luxurious silk-like sheen under the lights; to accentuate this texture, I specifically coordinated with the photographer to preserve shadow details and avoid blown-out highlights that would erase the weave.
For makeup and hair, complementing the reddish-brown wig and plush beast ears of this Kemonomimi cosplay required blending reddish tones around the eyes with delicate floral motifs painted at the outer corners. Trimming and styling the wig took considerable time, especially shaping the side locks to contour snugly against the jawline. Fastening the plush ears required secure bobby pin placement so active movements wouldn't cause slip-ups. Selecting the contact lenses was equally deliberate; to match the overall palette, I settled on a yellowish-green pair that gave my gaze remarkable depth under warm illumination. The base makeup demanded a lightweight feel with high coverage; because heavy smoke was pumped onto the set—which easily degrades foundation—the setting spray and powder work were executed rigorously.
Regarding set design, to harmonize with the Fugue theme, we incorporated extensive floral arrangements, including cherry blossoms, crimson maples, and white hydrangeas. The birdcage lantern on the left served as the soul of the set; its warm light not only enriched dimensional depth but also worked with the smoke machine to produce an ethereal Tyndall haze. For lighting, we primarily relied on warm-toned fixtures angled from the side, casting a soft rim light along my silhouette so that even straight-out-of-camera raw shots looked exceptional. The wooden side table held a bronze censer and a glass vase, detail props that greatly enhanced the narrative richness. To establish spatial depth, blurred floral branches were placed in the foreground to deepen the depth of field.
During shooting, I explored reclining and side-seated postures. When half-reclining, one must pay close attention to leg-crossing angles and core balance—appearing languid without actually collapsing. Props like the rouge compact and teacup in hand infused narrative depth, while calibrating the gaze was vital: conveying a seemingly nonchalant yet subtly seductive allure. To achieve that natural, fluttering drape of the hem, my assistant off-camera constantly smoothed out the skirt folds through repeated adjustments. Makeup touch-ups were frequent between takes, as the warm lamps and layered garments drained considerable stamina. Although shooting this set was exhausting, the moment I saw the finished photos, every bit of effort felt profoundly worthwhile in this Honkai: Star Rail Tingyun cosplay.
