[Wang Zhaojun Cosplay] Honor of Kings Red and White Feather Garment Look: Highlight Moments at the Anime Convention

This outfit featuring spliced red and white feathers, paired with a golden headpiece and staff, was my Wang Zhaojun cosplay look prepared for the Jiangmen Jieyuanji anime convention. After receiving the final retouched shots, I picked this seated photo as the cover because the overall visual focal point and body proportions were well-balanced within the composition.

Let's talk about the costume and props first. The hem of the red dress features a high slit, while the white feathers across the upper chest and the dangling texture of the sleeves are actually quite tricky to manage—larger movements can easily mess them up. The orb at the top of the staff and its golden cloud pattern structures offered great reflections under the lights, and holding it during the shoot wasn't too heavy, imposing minimal restrictions on movement.

The photography this time was a studio shoot booked on-site at the Jiangmen anime convention, utilizing a black backdrop and a setup of hard light. As you can tell from the equipment in the picture, a Godox softbox was right beside us. Hard lighting cast onto this white wig and red-and-white outfit creates strong contrast, making the character's silhouette look very crisp. However, it places high demands on base makeup, as uneven blending or slight oiliness become extremely noticeable under intense lighting. So during makeup application, I deliberately expanded the red-brown blending area for the eyes, paired with patterned large-diameter contact lenses to counter flatness under strong light. For lip color, I chose a brighter red to enhance my complexion.

The shooting process went very smoothly. The photographer had me try several different poses on this black round stool. The seated pose in the picture was selected for the cover because my crossed legs lined up nicely with the dress slit, complementing my raised arm and the angle of the staff to give the photo a solid structure. The poses in photos two and three are more relaxed, while photo four is a half-body close-up focusing on facial and headpiece details. Although the golden crescent headpiece is quite prominent, its center of gravity was stable without flattening my hair or tilting.

When selecting photos, we comprehensively considered lighting, composition, and overall character accuracy. Some discarded shots were due to harsh highlights directly on my face or feather sleeves blocking staff details during movement, leading to these four final convention photos. Post-processing mainly adjusted skin tone and the saturation of the dress's red portions, giving the golden accessories a richer metallic sheen while retaining the texture of ground shadows. Since this studio Cosplay photography lighting was designed to build three-dimensionality, over-smoothing it would lose the on-site atmosphere.

During early preparations, the special eye makeup for this outfit took the longest time to refine. Because the character's eye makeup has strong stylistic traits, combined with variables in the venue's lighting environment, repeated testing was required to ensure a natural look in photos. Personally, I feel high-contrast hard light brings out better expression than soft light for vibrant, fantasy-themed outfits, though it does test the photographer's proficiency in lighting setup.

After completing this photoshoot, my biggest takeaway is that costumes with feathers or large flowing gauze fabrics require careful attention to edge flow during posing, otherwise they easily look messy. The photographer coordinated wonderfully with the shooting rhythm, allowing me to adjust my posture, gaze, and prop angles quickly.

This set serves as a little summary of my experience at the Jiangmen Jieyuanji anime convention. The atmosphere at the venue was great and everyone was so enthusiastic. Being able to document this look completely and achieve this final result with post-processing cooperation made the whole process feel truly rewarding.
