When shooting this set of photos, it just happened to coincide with the rainy season of the Firefly ACG Expo. Originally, an indoor venue shoot was planned, but while waiting for the shuttle outside, the rain got heavier and heavier. So, I simply found an eave by the street to shelter from the rain, where I happened to meet a photographer who excelled at candid shots. Thus, we got these few rainy-day maid outfit convention photos.
This design features the classic blue and pink dual-color gradient curly hair paired with crossed hairpins, an iconic element that many fellow fans can recognize at first glance. The wig's hair strands were manually adjusted for flow, and the crossed hairpins are the perfect finishing touch, giving the overall look more recognition. The details of the maid outfit are highly exquisite, with a black and white color scheme plus a white ruffled apron, paired with white stockings and Mary Jane shoes, delivering a sharp contrast and rich texture visually.
To fit the overall style, I prepared this pink little rabbit plush toy and a wooden tray in advance as interactive props, hoping to enhance the agility of the frame and give the outdoor shoot a more everyday life vibe. The outdoor lighting conditions on a rainy day really test the camera's dynamic range. Because of the backlighting from surrounding streetlights and car headlights, the glare hitting us happened to perfectly outline the silhouette of the hair strands. Although the ground was wet, the reflection brought a unique atmosphere to the final photos, giving the otherwise ordinary street a cinematic texture.
At that time, the sound of raindrops hitting the wooden tray was very crisp. To capture natural movements, we tried two poses—kneeling on one knee and semi-standing—within the limited ground space, hoping to catch the most natural expression. Changing outfits during conventions often feels like racing against the weather, and chance shooting opportunities like this are truly rare. This is also why I prefer bringing small props to anime conventions; sometimes the outdoor areas of a convention are more natural than the indoor ones, making it easier to produce unique photos filled with a sense of daily life.
Looking back at these raw photos after returning, rainy day convention photos are often quite difficult in terms of handling light, because you have to both preserve the everyday feel of the convention's outdoor scenery and avoid chaotic reflections. The photographer very cleverly used the car headlights behind as rim lighting, keeping the overall color atmosphere unified. The pose and expression captured at that moment felt very close to the aura of the styling I wanted to express, and I hope everyone can feel the lazy yet playful vibe conveyed in this work. This shoot was actually prepared in a rush; after encountering the sudden downpour, my only thought while sheltering from the rain was to not get the wig and skirt hem too wet. I never expected that the light and shadow of the rainy night, combined with the model's performance, would turn this everyday scene into something so narrative-rich.
