This blue-and-white fairytale themed photoshoot for Yao cosplay from Honor of Kings was captured on-site at the Shenzhen Anime Festival (Honor of Kings & Shenzhen Anime Festival). The primary design philosophy of this costume lies in its airy, layered silhouette; therefore, in terms of fabric selection, I specifically chose translucent tulle with a pearlescent luster, layered over a soft pale-pink lining, which yielded delicate color shifts under the convention's complex overhead lighting. For the wig, a silver-white base transitioned into gradient blue tips, styled with side braids accented by multiple blue ribbon bows to enhance overall liveliness. The white plush beast ears and translucent gradient antler horns atop the head served as focal highlights of this styling; the beast ears were structured with internal wire, allowing on-the-fly angle adjustments to suit the camera. For makeup, to accentuate 2D anime qualities, I wore large-diameter blue contact lenses, emphasizing the outer lashes and lower eyeliner droop, paired with a generous sweep of peachy-pink blush to craft an innocent, doe-eyed look.
The halter off-the-shoulder neckline and cloud-shaped plush ornamentation across the chest formed the visual centerpiece of the upper bodice. To keep the skirt from appearing overly bulky while walking, I added cinching waist ties and paired it with lace-trimmed white Stockings (Stockings); this not only elongated leg lines in full-body frames, but also harmonized beautifully with the plush pom-poms and ribbon bows to preserve chromatic unity. Blue ribbons tied around my arms billowed in the air as I moved, injecting organic dynamic motion into the frames.
As for props, I prepared a colossal white floppy-eared plush doll and a blue magic wand. The plush doll was clutching a mini teddy bear—a delightful contrast that made the photos feel even more vibrant and whimsical. The handle of the wand was wrapped in blue satin ribbon, echoing the costume's subtle accents. At the Shenzhen Anime Festival, because natural ambient light was rather dim, photographer Merlin primarily deployed a dual-strobe setup supplemented by a reflector to illuminate my face and bring out the rich texture of the fabrics. To achieve that billowing skirt effect in Photo 3, I twirled repeatedly to capture dynamic in-motion captures driven by physical inertia. With multiple voluminous tiers in the skirt, the centrifugal force of each spin caused the sheer tulle layers to float in graceful, distinct arcs.
Looking back on the entire shoot, although the convention hall was noisy and the concrete floor was unyielding, seeing the translucent radiance of the blue-and-white palette brought to life under the strobes made every adjustment and trial completely worthwhile. The character of Yao carries an inherently dreamlike aura, and balancing contrasting textures with calculated lighting angles allowed us to faithfully capture that whimsical spirit. I also met many fellow cosplay enthusiasts at Shenzhen Anime Festival, exchanging tips on wig trimming, styling, and fiber maintenance, which provided wonderful inspiration for my future designs (Yao cosplay & Honor of Kings).
