[Yae Miko cosplay] AW Convention photos: Atmospheric Reflections with Folding Fan and Lighting

The shoot for this AW Convention photo primarily focused on capturing the texture of this Yae Miko costume. As a massively popular character in Genshin Impact, the white jacquard satin fabric truly puts lighting to the test; only when paired with the red lining does the full layering emerge. People kept walking by in the background during the shoot, so the photographer opted for a large-aperture telephoto lens to blow out the background, making the subject pop far better. The resulting shots turned out remarkably clean, almost looking like a studio shoot.

The costume is packed with details, particularly the circular pendant with purple florals at the chest and the thin red cords along the neckline, which easily shifted out of place while walking around and required constant readjustments prior to shooting. The fox ears on top were made of a relatively rigid material, yet securing them remained quite demanding; combined with the extended shoot duration, my scalp felt strained. Fortunately, the lighting on-site was well-executed—especially the side rim-lighting catching the edges of the pink wig, which rendered clean hair strand textures and created a richly dimensional look.

The folding fan serves as a crucial prop for this character. The calligraphy on the fan leaves was custom-made to a 1:1 scale of the original; using it to conceal parts of the face offered significant compositional advantages. I tested various fan poses, such as revealing the full face naturally, exposing only one eye, or completely covering the lower half of the face to intensify the expression in my gaze. Looking at the finished photos, using the fan to cultivate mystery worked wonders while preserving the character's innate elegance.

When capturing a Convention photo in an anime convention environment, efficiency is paramount. With heavy foot traffic all around, occupying a prime spot for an extended period is nearly impossible, necessitating snapshots and quick posing. We were fortunate this time to find a corner with strong diffused ambient light that prevented harsh, unflattering facial shadows. Paired with the eye makeup and pink-violet contact lenses, my gaze carried ample luminosity. Because I personally enjoy engaging in eye contact with the camera, many photos in this session featured direct, piercing stares locked onto the lens.

Although the garment's tailoring somewhat restricted movement—especially the wide red sleeves that pulled on the outfit whenever lifting heavy props or raising my arms—its visual presentation in the photos was surprisingly exquisite, particularly the off-shoulder silhouette and white collar that accentuated body lines. Personally, I recommend photo 1 as the cover: the centered composition offers great depth of field, the white robe and red sleeves create a sharp color contrast, and the character's overall poise—mysterious, composed, and effortlessly in control—is captured comprehensively.

Overall, I am thoroughly satisfied with these Convention photos. Although the shooting process was exhausting and the heavy headpieces and props placed quite a strain on my head, faithfully embodying the character's spirit and freezing diverse postures before the lens was deeply rewarding. I'm already looking forward to the next convention photoshoot for a Genshin Impact character!
