Right after sunset at dusk, a blaze of burning clouds ignited across the horizon, providing the most flawless natural backdrop for this shoot. To achieve the desired effect, I set up a fill light on one side and countered it with a red RGB light on the other, relying on my ever-trusted Sony A7 IV paired with the 85GM lens. The ultra-wide aperture of the 85GM performs exceptionally reliably during night shoots—tack-sharp in focus, which, combined with the color contrast sculpted by the RGB light, made the straight-out-of-camera colors intensely rich.
Cosplaying Mima this time, the styling featured a red strapless mesh puff dress, long white gloves, White stockings paired with red high heels, along with deliberately applied fake blood on the face and a bright red headband. The transparent curved-handle umbrella served as the finishing touch of the entire outfit, refracting gorgeous halos under the illumination. The fake blood elements alongside the vivid red dress, harmonized with the hazy ambiance of the night scene, seamlessly conveyed that state suspended between innocence and madness.
The shooting location was chosen beside nighttime glass railings and stone steps. The background glass reflected the blurred city lights and silhouettes of passersby; under the counterpoint of cool and warm red-and-green lights, the frame naturally took on a dreamy, theatrical presence. Crossing my legs while sitting on the steps, or standing high holding the umbrella in one hand while touching my cheek, all aimed to maximize the visual tension between the white stockings and the red dress. Conveying the gaze was the most challenging part: it couldn't merely look cute, but needed to carry a trace of playful irony and neuroticism. Performance before the lens demands tremendous emotional grounding—especially confronting a close-up powerhouse like the 85GM, where every microscopic facial nuance is magnified, requiring me to immerse myself completely into the character's psychological world.
The challenge of night portraiture lies in balancing ambient light with subject exposure. Side lighting ensured the three-dimensionality of facial features, while the red light counterpoint enriched chromatic layers. The shallow depth of field brought by the wide aperture cleanly filtered out cluttered background elements, locking visual focus firmly onto the subject. This photo set is not only an homage to the classic by Satoshi Kon, but also a fresh personal attempt at emotional delivery. Tied together by the White stockings and bloodstained styling, the entire creative process was deeply immersive, and I hope this series transports everyone back into that realm of psychological suspense.
