This time I shot a set of Skadi the Corrupting Heart at Bilibili World, and I'm quite satisfied with the overall photo production results, especially the texture of the lantern in the low-light environment.
A lot of effort went into the details when making this costume. The red multi-layered ruffled skirt hem carries a wonderful dynamic beauty when walking, and the black lace-up design at the collar and chest beautifully highlights the character's temperament. The cyan-blue gloves and the metallic reflection texture on the edge of the hat form an excellent contrast of warm and cool tones as well as gloss against the red dress. The silver-white wig was styled with medium-long curls and braids, paired with red colored contacts, and the focus of the makeup was placed on the clean and sharp eye makeup.
The flow of people at Bilibili World was truly massive. Weaving through the crowd in this dramatic attire was actually not easy, especially with that vintage lantern I was carrying—to prevent it from bumping into others or getting knocked around, I had to shield it the entire time. However, the upside was that many passersby and fellow fans were very enthusiastic, and I received a lot of positive feedback during the shooting onlookers.
When shooting this set, we intentionally picked a darker area inside the exhibition hall. Those white string lights originally scattered in the background turned into varying sizes of bokeh after being blurred in the lens out-of-focus areas, exactly baking an atmosphere resembling a night mist. The warm yellow light source naturally emitted by the lantern also served as an excellent tool for facial fill light, interweaving with the cool white hair strands and cyan-blue gloves. This collision of warm and cool color blocks injected more tension into the frame.
This time I experimented with three different postures and compositions. Figure 1 features sitting upright and looking straight into the lens, cradling the lantern in my hands, mainly delivering a quiet and cold atmospheric feel. Figure 2 is a half-body close-up, lifting the lantern high up in an attempt to forge a posture resembling casting magic or questioning. However, my personal favorite remains the composition of sitting on the floor in Figure 3, where I intentionally showcased the silver boots and the black leather cross-straps on the legs. This both elongates the visual proportions of the legs and makes the overall sitting pose look rather lazy and casual, beautifully echoing the character's cold yet composed state. Especially that black cross-leather strap on the leg nicely refines the leg shape, which, coordinated with the silver platform boots against the backdrop of the red skirt, appears highly crisp and raises the character recognition of the overall roleplay project during this cosplay photography session.
Shooting on-site at an anime convention actually heavily tests the chemistry between the cosplayer and the photographer, because people are constantly walking by in an endless stream, and the lighting frequently alters due to passersby. Besides providing an atmospheric feel, the lantern prop also serves to balance the frame in terms of composition, preventing the side holding it from looking too empty. Although the entire shooting process was compact, the cooperation with the team was very pleasant, and the shutter clicks on-site along with the onlookers gave this outdoor shoot a strong sense of immersion.
Every time shooting a beloved character is a very special experience; from combing the wig to straightening out each layer of the skirt hem, everything needs to be treated seriously. By preserving the dark background tones and letting the warm light of the lantern become the visual center, I hope to bring everyone a relatively immersive character restoration feeling.
