[Gokou Ruri Cosplay] Everyday Recreation of Oreimo's Kuroneko

Putting on this classic Gokou Ruri look featuring a black-and-white color palette paired with Grey pantyhose, there were plenty of specific adjustments worth noting during the shoot.

First was the costume selection. Since the character embodies both Gothic and Lolita elements, I chose a structured black coat paired with a white blouse. The lace frills along the collar had to frame the face nicely, and the fullness of the skirt was also key—I deliberately added multiple layers of petticoats; otherwise, the voluminous skirt could easily deflate, making the final photos look flat.

Next was balancing the color scheme. Although predominantly black and white, I opted for a dark purple straight long wig to match her iconic character design. Grooming the wig took considerable effort because long fibers tangle easily and require gentle detangling, but once paired with the black cat ears on top, the silhouette became instantly recognizable.

This shoot was once again home mirror selfies, relying purely on natural window light without any complex fill lighting. Posing in front of a full-length mirror really tests your posture. For instance, I deliberately chose the last shot—with one leg lifted—as the cover. Tilting my body while raising a leg not only visually elongated my leg lines, but also naturally highlighted the texture of the Grey pantyhose, enhancing the depth and appeal of the composition. The other photos captured varying hand gestures, like open palms and peace signs, to convey her tsundere and confident personality.

For makeup, I elongated the eyeliner with a slight flick at the outer corners to emphasize that sharp, 2D-style gaze. Although smartphone resolution and lighting can wash out finer details, through these shoots I realized the essence of this look lies in a natural stance and expressive eyes.

The overall preparation—changing into costume, combing the wig, and adjusting the skirt and necktie—took about an hour or two. Walking in this outfit requires keeping an eye on the petticoat at all times to prevent wardrobe mishaps or distorted posture. Instead of seeking outdoor locations, I chose a clean indoor setting to keep all focus on the costume details. For a black-and-white theme, a simpler background highlights the garment layers much better and leaves more room for post-processing. The stark contrast between black and white, softened by Grey pantyhose, keeps the outfit from feeling too gloomy, lending it a touch of vintage elegance instead. This was a delightful shoot, and through mindful control of costume and expressions, I hope to have captured the unique charm of this character.
