Slipping into this "Spring Lantern Lady" outfit for Azur Lane Elbing cosplay, securing the hairstyle and accessories took up a major portion of the makeup and styling preparation compared to everyday shoots. The set was chosen in a wood-toned Chinese indoor space, where a giant glowing full moon behind me and hanging calligraphy scrolls imbued the frame with an inherently rich classical ambiance.
The top half of this costume adopts an off-the-shoulder and cutout design, with black bows and golden piping serving as exquisite accents against the dominant white tone. The black sheer tulle pieced onto the lower hem grounds the visual weight of the garment so it doesn't appear overly flimsy. Paired with dramatic ruffled tulle sleeves, this soft fabric reveals a semi-translucent, layered texture under the lighting, which is one of my favorite costume details in this photo set.
In terms of prop pairing, folding fans and round fans were used alternately throughout the shoot. Holding a fan makes it feel much easier to immerse into the aura of this "Spring Lantern Lady." A folding fan allows for slightly valiant poses, while a round fan better matches gentle, dignified postures. Utilizing the wooden daybed and plush rug on set, my poses were primarily leaning, sitting sideways, or lying down, striving to fill the scene with a relaxed ease.
When portraying characters from Azur Lane, capturing the character's inner essence is paramount. Although Elbing appears in a very leisurely state, maintaining specific angles during the shoot required substantial physical stamina. For instance, to elongate the proportions of the lower body, I constantly had to tense my leg lines, and with black strappy high heels on my feet, stabilizing the body posture was crucial.
A lot of thought was also invested into the hair accessories for this look; golden flower-and-leaf hairpins paired with hanging golden tassels on both sides of the forehead enhanced the dynamic elegance of the overall styling. Given the white-hair and blue-eyed design, the makeup did not use overly dramatic eyeshadow, focusing instead on harmonizing the eyeliner with the blue lenses to keep the gaze crystal clear and prevent it from being overwhelmed by stray hair or complex ornaments.
For photography, the lighting design was very sophisticated. The large full moon at the back served not only as an atmospheric prop, but also acted as a backlight source to contour the silhouette of the hair and costume. The front used soft light to illuminate facial features and garment details, which brought out the texture of the tulle dress without crushing black fabric details, keeping the overall hair color look remarkably clean.
The ambiance enhanced by Chinese furniture, scrolls, and porcelain in the scene added tremendous flair to this photo set. The texture of the wooden architecture combined with the warm indoor lighting created a wonderful integration between the 2D character-styled outfit and the real-world set, preserving the character's original traits while visually adding a touch of authentic realism.
Every time I complete a character's styling and photoshoot, I gain new insights into the character. Wearing this Han-element style outfit and bringing the character into this classical Chinese setting, the entire process was serene and deeply focused. Watching the final photos flicker across the screen where light, shadow, and posture aligned perfectly, it felt like a truly memorable cosplay experience worth documenting.
