[Cirno Cosplay] The Ice Fairy of Gensokyo: The Strongest Force Emerges

Taking advantage of this Autumn Anime Convention photoshoot, I finally produced a satisfying result for this ice-blue fantasy-style idol outfit that I’ve been brainstorming for ages. As the strongest ice fairy in Gensokyo, the styling and makeup this time were entirely geared toward highlighting that sparkling, ice-crystal-like radiance.

Let’s start with the outfit: the layered ice-blue and white gradient tulle skirt features an exceptionally lightweight and fluffy texture, offering fantastic dynamic movement as I walked around. The red-and-white bowknot at the neckline serves as an excellent visual anchor, perfectly offsetting the vast cool tones of the rest of the ensemble. While this garment looks ethereal and fairy-like, it posed a massive challenge during the actual shoot—namely, those floating holographic transparent crystals and beaded strands. To recreate those cool crystal special effects from the character's original setting, we anchored multiple highly reflective holographic acrylic pieces onto the costume. These glittering props produced wonderful refracted light during movement, but they also introduced many restrictions when posing, requiring constant vigilance over their placement to prevent them from being obscured by elbows or the skirt hemline.

The wig this time was also a critical element of character shaping; I selected a trimmed light blue bob haircut with perfectly neat bangs and an appropriate amount of wispy side bangs left on both sides to frame the face. Coordinated with that pair of ice-crystal flower-like hair ornaments and accented with a red bowknot, it rendered the character's overall head silhouette incredibly full and vivid. For the makeup, we intentionally put extra effort into the eye details, dusting some pink blush near the corners of the eyes. Paired with light blue colored contacts, it projected an ethereal presence before the lens, perfectly matching that aura of a lovable "Idiot" who simultaneously carries a hint of a powerhouse's vibe.

Among the prints, I quite adore the compositions where I am sitting on a ladder or crouching on the ground. In particular, that pose where I sit on a high stool with one hand resting on my forehead and the other extending outward (which is the second print you see) was actually exhausting to maintain; I had to stabilize my center of gravity while simultaneously stretching my limbs to the absolute limit to reinforce that "I am the strongest" tsundere vibe. Photographer Wakaba is incredibly skilled at capturing motion and emotion; he guided me on-site to adjust angles and my gaze, which, paired with those massive circular bokeh spots in the background, turned the dreamlike ambiance up to the max.

The convention venue was actually quite bustling, but the positioning and temperament of this costume demanded a relatively clean, cool-toned presentation of light and shadow, so we communicated extensively regarding staging and lighting. The overall mood follows a crisp, crystal-clear path, which beautifully fits the signature traits of the ice fairy from Touhou Project. Honestly, before shooting this set, I was a bit worried about my own expressiveness—whether I could project that state balancing both cuteness and confidence. However, as the shoot progressed and I got into the zone, I became completely immersed in the character, truly feeling like that tsundere girl who commands absolute zero and is ready to shout "Idiot" at any moment.

Finally, a huge thanks to the photographer's patient guidance and snapshot captures, beautifully recording the layered depth of this outfit and the iridescent colors of the holographic accessories.
