[Shimoe Koharu cosplay] Memories of Blue Archive at Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo

Here is the official photo recap for my Shimoe Koharu cosplay from the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo! This shoot was conducted right in the bustling center of the expo hall amidst massive foot traffic. To overpower the cluttered background and eliminate visual distractions, the photographer deployed a Sony A7 IV in tandem with a multi-light Jinbei strobe setup to cleanly crush the ambient lighting. The primary key light was a Jinbei HD250max fitted with an 80cm octagonal softbox; this expansive, ultra-soft source beautifully smoothed skin textures, brought out the delicate weave and tone of the pink dress, and simultaneously dropped the ambient exposure to make the subject pop effortlessly. A bare-bulb Jinbei HD100 was positioned behind to the side as a dedicated rim/kicker light, carving out crisp, luminous highlights along the silhouette of the wings and wig to deliver deep spatial dimensionality. For the lower body, a Jinbei Hi500pro was aimed directly at the floor to produce a soft upward ground bounce; this reflected fill light visually elongated the leg lines and imbued the skin with a luminous, translucent glow. Because the venue floor was dull, low-reflectance gray concrete, adding this low-angle leg light was essential for overall tonal balance. We triggered the flashes using the Jinbei Q7III (Sony edition), which maintained flawless wireless sync without a single misfire throughout the entire session.

The craftsmanship of the costume translated splendidly under this lighting setup. The red heart emblem on the white apron retained rich, vibrant color saturation under the diffused light, while the layered hemline of the skirt exhibited smooth, natural shadow gradients. Throughout the shoot, I continuously fine-tuned my poses to align with the precise angles of the lights. The standing pose—crossing my legs while holding up the miniature cake prop—effectively accentuated leg proportions, aided by the photographer's deliberate camera height adjustments. In the seated poses, the skirt flared outward naturally, pairing with the black feathered wings to evoke a serene, storybook innocence. On the hand holding the cake, even the white glove around the wrist subtly captured delicate warm-and-cool reflections bouncing off the pink satin dress. The outfit itself features a semi-reflective satin finish that is notorious for being lighting-sensitive—one slight miscalculation can easily result in harsh specular blowout or muddy, crushed shadows. Fortunately, the diffused, omnidirectional throw from the 80cm octabox eliminated harsh specular highlights, preserving the soft, premium feel of the fabric. Under this wrap-around illumination, the pink wig appeared ethereal and silky, harmonizing with the character's eye color to establish a rich, immersive aesthetic.

As the cosplayer, my biggest takeaway was that despite the loud, chaotic convention floor, precise optical control and equipment pairing allowed the final images to completely filter out the surrounding mess, preserving a pristine, high-end anime aesthetic. This shoot also gave me a much deeper appreciation for on-location lighting design—especially how a low-angle floor bounce dramatically flatters and defines leg silhouettes. The Sony A7 IV delivered gorgeous color science straight out of the sensor, preserving true-to-life tones that required only minor cropping to reach the finished presentation. Convention shoots truly test the unspoken synergy between model and photographer; I am immensely grateful for the photographer’s patient direction, which helped me quickly find the ideal poses to catch the light. Because I was wearing a short skirt, crouching poses were limited, so we focused primarily on standing and seated variations. Moving around the hall frequently shifted the skirt layers and headpiece wings, requiring continuous on-the-spot adjustments, though thankfully the wig and accessories were securely pinned.

The ambient lighting inside the convention hall was notoriously mixed—overhead booth spotlights and surrounding neon signage threatened severe color contamination. By overpowering the ambient light with the Jinbei strobes, the Sony A7 IV’s auto white balance remained exceptionally consistent and accurate, saving immense time in post-production. Dialing the strobes to roughly 5500K locked in the crisp white balance of the garment, making this setup ideal for complex lighting environments. Wearing this costume made me realize that while it looks light and airy, the structured petticoat and wings actually make movement quite cumbersome. The wings in particular demand precise angling to avoid looking flat or rigid on camera. Luckily, the photographer was remarkably agile in capturing fluid motion, ensuring the skirt folds looked effortless when seated, avoiding wardrobe flaws, and preserving the character’s hallmark cuteness. Ultimately, this shoot proved the indispensable power of off-camera lighting: relying purely on ambient light often leaves images flat, whereas this three-light configuration immediately injected lifelike volume and pop. In particular, the bare Jinbei HD100 kicker light acted as a secret weapon, casting a delicate halo along the edges of the plush prop and hair to seamlessly separate the subject from the background. The Sony A7 IV rendered pink and white tones flawlessly, producing raw files so polished that only minimal exposure tweaks were needed for the final cut. For anime convention cosplay photography, this entire workflow offered outstanding results—from the seated shots highlighting the apron's crisp red heart to the standing cross-legged composition showing seamless highlight-to-shadow transitions on the legs. The makeup was equally deliberate: the eyeliner was extended to match Koharu’s distinctive eye contour, paired with pink contact lenses that sparkled vividly under the strobes. To counter venue light pollution, I adjusted my foundation shade to achieve a fair, rosy complexion under the HD250max softbox. Tucked into a quiet corner of the hall, the 40-minute shoot turned a cold concrete floor into a stunning visual stage, yielding an anime-style photography set that exceeded all our expectations.
