Finding a stone wall with vintage textures at a street corner as the backdrop, the soft natural light perfectly illuminates every detail of the costumes. Today, my partner and I completed a dual outdoor shoot for Chino Kafu and Cocoa Hoto Cosplay. The iconic light blue and pink hair colors are highly eye-catching outdoors, attracting many curious glances from passersby along the street.
To match the healing slice-of-life atmosphere of the work "Is the Order a Rabbit?", we specially prepared a fluffy white rabbit plushie as a prop. This rabbit was not just a posing prop, but also the key bridge for interaction during this shoot. During the shoot, we designed frames of squatting down and pinching noses; such natural physical contact perfectly conveys the sense of intimate friendship between the two.
The accuracy of the costumes is actually hidden in every detail: Chino's cross hairpin, long ponytail, and yellow cardigan layered over a sailor collar; Cocoa's twin-tails, white-and-pink color-blocked jacket, and side hairpins. We repeatedly confirmed the positions of the accessories before heading out to the ACG outdoor location, striving to stay as close as possible to the original designs. As cosplayers, besides putting on the clothes, we need to blend into the characters' demeanors. Chino's quiet, introverted nature and Cocoa's lively, passionate energy need to be presented as a contrast through eye contact and the dynamic vs. static movements of our bodies.
When shooting this kind of anime, my personal experience for a Moe-style cosplay is that there's no need to rely excessively on post-processing. Keeping the frame bright, clean, and translucent, while emphasizing the natural skin texture and the soft quality of the fabrics, is just enough. Looking at the raw photos after the shoot, this clear and warm atmosphere feels incredibly healing. Although it's inevitable to encounter onlookers during an outdoor shoot, as long as we focus our attention on each other and immerse ourselves in the characters' stories, the outside noise gradually fades away. This outdoor shoot was set under the natural light around 3:00 PM. The angle of the light perfectly brought out the white sheen of the skirt hem, making the folds of the fabric distinct in layers. We experimented with different camera angles and ultimately chose a composition centered on character interaction, hoping to fully present the unique healing atmosphere of this slice-of-life anime in the frames.
