The completion of this outdoor shoot in the Southern Hemisphere snow mountains is extremely high. Combined with this set of photos and the specific environment, today I'll chat about some operational details from the setting to the actual shoot. The character styling selected is this red, white, and yellow bunny outfit, which creates a strong contrast between its color saturation and the pure white of the snow on camera. In this cosplay photoshoot, a balance was struck regarding the overall tailored proportions of the costume, especially the connection between the costume hem and the white tights, paired with the little red leather shoes, making the overall visual center of gravity exceptionally clear.
The shooting location was selected in the high-altitude snow mountain areas around Sydney, where the snow quality and environment were amazing. The weather that day provided excellent diffuse reflection conditions without overly intense direct sunlight, instead allowing the subject's skin tone to maintain a natural translucency against the backdrop of the blue sky. To adapt to the deep depth of field of the snow mountains, the photographer and I adopted alternating shooting from wide-angle to medium-long focal lengths. The wide-angle end utilized large areas of negative space from the sky and snow mountains to pull out a sense of spatial depth; while shooting close-ups and half-body shots, special attention was paid to the dead trees and exposed rocks in the snow as foreground obstruction, which both enhanced the layers of the frame and prevented the character from looking too thin in such a vast natural scene, adding great value to our Sydney photography.
During the actual shoot, the wind on-site was quite strong, blowing up the edges of the costume fabric. To capture this kind of natural dynamic movement, the shutter speed was constantly maintained at a high level, combined with face recognition. In the outdoor environment with intense UV rays, the makeup selected a matte texture with light modifications on the highlight areas to prevent oiliness and reflection on the face. Under the high-reflection environment of the snow, one must pay extra attention to exposure compensation during shooting. The reflection rate of the snow in the frame is extremely high; if automatic exposure is used conventionally, it can easily cause the subject's face to be too dark, so the exposure compensation was manually adjusted to balance the brightness of the snow surface and the subject. Post-processing mainly focused on basic adjustments for colors, ensuring the texture of the blue in the sky and the red in the costume was preserved, without excessive skin smoothing or darkening the environment, keeping the authentic snow texture and vegetation details.
Wearing this costume on a snow mountain presents a difficulty in warmth and movement control. During activities, attention must be paid to the amplitude of body movements to avoid messy clothing. Meanwhile, during the shoot, one needs to express the character's static standing state while considering the agile movement of the wind blowing the costume. This places high demands on on-site direction and rhythm control, resulting in a highly natural dynamic feel in the end. This kind of outdoor snow mountain location shooting features fast-changing light and environments, but under sufficient preparation, satisfying moments were efficiently captured. Compared to indoor studio shoots, the snow mountain scenery brings a highly unique situational overlay to Anime-style photography, and I believe those who love outdoor styles will highly enjoy this type of creative process.
