The character I cosplayed at Chongqing Dreamland Comic Exhibition this time was Vanilla. For this set of Convention photos, the pre-production focus was entirely dedicated to costume accuracy and wig sculpting. The pair of fuzzy white cat ears on my head served as the core of the styling, requiring careful trimming of the bangs and framing sidelocks so that the long silvery-white hair maintained airy volume without obscuring the blue-and-white checkered bow hair accessories. Regarding the outfit, the halter-neck bare-midriff design spliced with blue-and-white plaid and pure white fabric was exquisitely tailored; the dark cross-lacing at the waist and the blue heart-shaped buttons across the chest had to be repositioned and confirmed repeatedly before the convention to ensure the silhouette hugged cleanly during shoots.
To match Vanilla's persona in makeup, the focus was placed on vivid bright blue contact lenses and soft pink blush dusting the cheeks. Due to the complex convention hall lighting, the base makeup needed to stay pristine and durable to prevent oily shine under intensive shooting. Pairing white over-the-elbow gloves with White stockings on my legs not only honored the Cat girl lore, but also elongated limb lines visually. However, walking around the convention all day in this coordinate was quite a physical workout—especially in dark blue suede high heels—so I brought along a pair of flats to swap into during downtime. The white thigh-high stockings and the tiered ruffled hem also demanded constant care against snagging and creasing; every so often, I headed to the restroom to realign the skirt folds and lace-up ties, ensuring every frame captured my best state.
Immense gratitude to photographer @Damuyu for capturing these shots. The hardest part of convention photography is quickly locking into character amidst a noisy, bustling environment. To express the nimble charm of a Cat girl, I designed several distinct poses. For instance, in the first photo, I lifted one leg while curling both hands in front of my chest to mimic a cat stretching its paws, which not only showed off the layered outfit but also highlighted the sweeping arc of the skirt hem. In the shots showcasing the plush tail, I turned my torso sideways so the tail arched up naturally from behind, tilting my head slightly with eyes looking straight into the lens to enhance viewer engagement.
The venue's overhead lighting melted into gorgeous bokeh once blurred in the background, making the blue-and-white palette pop dramatically against dark backdrops. To ensure image quality, we located a relatively spacious corner with a clean backdrop near the edge of the hall, using a wide-aperture lens to compress space. With every shutter release, I had to keep my spine straight, shoulders relaxed, and make sure the gloves and sleeves remained smooth. Since Vanilla's styling leans sweet and gentle, expression management was kept soft, radiating a touch of innocence without looking stern.
Cosplaying at an anime convention is far more than just wearing an outfit for photos; it's about channeling the character's living presence. Teasing the wig, checking accessories, and controlling your breathing before the camera constitute the reality behind convention hall photos. While the blue-and-white checkered dress and white plush accessories required demanding care, seeing the faithful color rendition amidst interplay of light and shadow, alongside the fluffy texture of the ears and tail in the finished selects, washed away all the exhaustion from the day.
