[Shenhe Cosplay] Unlocking the Cool Aloofness and Gentleness of Genshin Impact Characters in Light and Shadows

In shooting this set of Shenhe cosplay, from the silver-white hair color of the wig to the red-and-gold earrings by the ears, from the golden tassels on the chest to the acrylic talismans in hand, the pairing of every accessory underwent repeated consideration and testing. In fact, back when setting the shooting plan, I felt that the character's contrast—a cool aloofness on the outside paired with a passionate obsession within—was immensely appealing. To reflect this presence, a halterneck top in a black-and-gold color scheme was selected for the outfit, complemented by wide, detachable sleeve drapes. Although the blue piping and small orange embroideries on the sleeve covers were subtle, they served as finishing touches amidst the overall heavy texture, making the whole outfit look more exquisite.

In setting the poses for shooting, we chose five different scenes to display different sides of the character. The first shot on an outdoor bench, facing natural light, made the wig's hair strands look full of texture. Moving to the indoor scene with mahogany furniture, the composure of dark wood was used to set off the black clothing, emphasizing a serene ambiance. For instance, in Photo 2, the movement of sitting on a wooden chair and slightly raising a hand, paired with black low heels, elongated leg lines nicely. In Photo 4, leaning against a wooden door while holding a talisman highlighted the aesthetic beauty of head and shoulder-neck lines.

My personal favorite is actually the last photo semi-reclining before a chessboard background, where the photographer used the geometric circle of the large chessboard as a framing structure, making the subject appear perfectly balanced in the frame. Turning the body slightly not only revealed the waistline, but also allowed the outfit's lower hem and blue ribbons to spread out naturally, looking visually relaxed and expansive. Shooting characters with Xianxia charm, eye contact and gaze expression are also key. It cannot be purely cold; there needs to be a subtle sense of distance without making viewers feel the character is entirely unapproachable in Anime-style photography.

In prop usage, those two light blue acrylic talismans produced a transparent and mysterious reflection under light illumination, perfectly making up for empty hands while adding a Chinese-style anime magic attribute aura to the character. Probably due to the character's inherent traits, I paid special attention to posture during outdoor shoots; halterneck clothing demands a lot from shoulders and neck, and thanks to regular posture training, I was able to keep the golden thread tassels at the collar positioned properly.

Looking across the entire photo set, my biggest takeaway was the integration of the red rope element. Although I didn't hold actual red threads in my hand, that red earring and the accents on the costume subtly aligned with the theme of control and release. While in many people's eyes doing cosplay is just changing clothes and taking a few photos, to me, this process feels more like a deep dialogue and a simulation of the character's journey. Being able to present these details through the camera lens during four hours of continuous shooting was truly an accomplished feeling.

To capture the most perfect light and shadow effects, the photographer kept adjusting fill-light positions. For example, in that indoor low-light environment, to avoid blowing out the white skirt into a dead flat white, environmental blue highlights were intentionally preserved, allowing the white floral woven patterns on the skirt hem to show clearly. This photoshoot gave me new insights into the visual expression of Chinese-style anime elements—especially how tassels on clothing and fabric folds present completely different textures under specific lighting angles.
