Cosplaying Dusk from Arknights took a lot of thought from the initial makeup test to set design. The wig featured custom cyan-blue gradient streaks, and the dragon horns atop my head were adjusted multiple times to achieve an authentic, natural curve. For the outfit, layering a white asymmetrical top beneath a long black coat added rich depth; the diamond lattice along the coat's hemline and the orange tie at the collar served as visual anchors. To align with the character's aloof demeanor in this Traditional Chinese style cosplay, I chose shorts paired with black platform ankle boots, allowing me to pose with greater dynamic tension on the rocks while highlighting leg lines.
The outdoor location on the day of the shoot was draped in heavy fog, perfectly matching Dusk's persona as an Ink wash style painter—aloof, otherworldly, and detached. Standing atop a stone terrace by the water, I touched my forehead lightly with my left hand while gripping the greatsword adorned with orange circular ring motifs in my right. This sword was not merely a prop, but also an essential fulcrum helping me balance and steady my posture. The hardest part during the shoot was keeping my gaze serene: with wind stirring the wig and coat hem, I had to master my facial expressions so my eyes conveyed both detachment and an intense, focused gaze in this Anime-style photography set.
The post-production artist did an incredible job adding swirling fluid water-ring visual effects around me, pushing dynamic tension to the max. The backdrop features classic Traditional Chinese style cosplay landscape imagery in Ink wash style, where distant pavilions and the warm yellow glow of lanterns created a striking warm-and-cool contrast against the cool tones. On set, I communicated constantly with the photographer regarding composition, seeking to infuse static frames with kinetic grace. To properly carry this oversized coat, I specifically trained my shoulder and back muscles prior to the shoot, ensuring cleaner, crisper shoulder lines when raising my arm or wielding the blade.
Many friends ask if cosplaying characters with heavy weapons and VFX is exhausting. Honestly, fueled by passion, the moment I step before the lens, all fatigue transforms into pure focus on the character. I adore the textural interplay between reality and fantasy in these photos—where the subject's tension merges with ethereal atmospheric grace, as if truly stepping forth from an Ink wash style landscape painting. From bespoke costume tailoring to custom prop finishes, every element was vetted meticulously, all to come closer to that master painter of the Sui clan who paints mountains and rivers with her brush.
