Putting on this classic school uniform outfit instantly takes me back to that sun-drenched classroom. With blonde hair, straight bangs, and pinkish-purple colored contacts, to recreate Marin's sweet yet cool vibe, I specifically did a reddish blend for the eye makeup. Paired with a black choker and pearl charms, I didn't dare to be sloppy with any details. Holding a lollipop in hand was probably my way of replicating her casual and slightly playful feel.
The cut of this white shirt is actually quite difficult to pull off; it needs to maintain a loose fit while revealing the shoulder and neck lines, and the way the tie was knotted was adjusted several times to find the most natural state. The blue-and-white checkered pleated skirt is a classic element, and I specially chose a fabric with a nice drape so the pleats look more layered when moving or posing. This shoot was indoors, and the warm light filtering down made everything look very soft, but I also intentionally kept some shadows to add dimension. There was no excessive skin smoothing, hoping to showcase a more authentic texture.
In fact, every time I cosplay a character, the parts that require the most effort are making the hair and makeup fit perfectly. Marin's hair color leans towards flaxen blonde, and the ends were slightly curled. Combined with the layered bangs, this ensures a great silhouette from any angle. Even the hand movements, like gently pulling at the collar or holding the lollipop, are all part of trying hard to capture her slightly sexy yet completely unpretentious demeanor through this anime-style makeup.
The character turnaround sheets and the animated movements of 2D characters are truly valuable references. While preparing for this cosplay, I re-watched the original work and discovered many small details I hadn't noticed before, such as the position of the necktie, the length of the skirt, and even the color of the nails. Bringing these elements one by one into the real-life costumes and props, and then presenting them through the lens, is probably the most rewarding part of doing casual cosplay.
