[Seiga Kaku Cosplay] Deep in the Bamboo Forest, a Touch of Ethereal Grace

For this shoot of Seiga Kaku, we actually chose a very dense bamboo forest located in the south. When initially choosing the location, I hesitated over whether to go for a grand ancient architectural setting. However, after discussing it with the photographer, we both agreed that a bamboo forest with a natural sense of tranquility—and even a bit of wild growth—better captures the unique aloof and slightly otherworldly essence of Touhou Project.

The outfit for this look is a very light pale green and white spliced long dress. The upper body features a lot of lace and ruffle designs, with delicate, airy sheer mesh at the neckline and cuffs that sways naturally as I walk. The black floral waist belt and that little pink flower were custom-made by a tailor specifically to break up the monotony of the large area of green. The blue wig is a core icon of the character's recognition, and shaping the circular loop and ring bun on top of the head took a lot of effort. In fact, to keep the hair and costume smooth and neat, we stayed in the bamboo forest for nearly three hours. There were many mosquitoes in the woods, but to keep the character completely in character, I just endured it.

The photographer @BritanniaGreatWitch was very good at capturing the light filtering through the bamboo. The lighting in a bamboo forest is actually much more complex than expected, because the crisscrossing bamboo stalks often create heavily dappled spots of light. In the first half-body close-up, the bamboo stalk lying across the front of the lens was an intentional framing technique. Under natural light, the light falling on the face and shoulders felt wonderful, making the overall atmosphere very mysterious.

In the second full-body shot, we deliberately used a patch of fallen, leaning bamboo and wild grass as a foreground to create a distinct frame. Combining this distant camera angle with a telephoto lens blurred the foreground greenery and dead branches beautifully, drawing all attention directly onto the figure illuminated by the light. The thick layer of fallen leaves and bamboo twigs crunching underfoot made me instinctively slow down my movements in that environment, as if even my breathing needed to be lighter.

Choosing the location for an outdoor shoot actually plays a decisive role in the final look of the photos. Many beginners ask me for tips on outdoor shoots; my experience is that you must shoot during the timeframe with the best light. For a bamboo forest location shoot like this, around 10:00 AM when the sun rises higher and light shines directly down into the forest, if you find the right angle, the whole image naturally comes with a sacred, ethereal quality. These natural light and shadow photography details need to be discussed with the photographer beforehand during the shoot itself, which is much more natural than forcing effects in post-production.

Seiga Kaku herself carries that unfathomable hermit aura in Touhou Project, so the movements during the shoot shouldn't be too stiff, nor too overly lively. I deliberately made several expressive gestures, such as gently touching my chin, or turning back while holding the bamboo staff in my hand, trying my best to recreate that relaxed sense of teasing the mortal world while remaining detached from everything. During the final color grading for this set, we specifically preserved the natural bluish-green tone of the bamboo forest and only slightly brightened the skin tone, making it look as though the person was completely merged into the bamboo forest.

The cosplay community usually looks bright and glamorous, but in reality, every outdoor shoot comes with many unexpected situations. This time in the bamboo forest, we occasionally encountered curious looks from tourists, but as long as you immerse yourself fully into the character and setting, those can be ignored. For me, a good cosplay experience is not only about restoring costumes and props, but also a chemical reaction between the character's aura and the shooting environment. This bamboo forest Seiga Kaku shoot was another attempt at exploring my understanding of the character, and I hope everyone can feel that ethereal vibe in the images.
