Shooting this Wuthering Waves Hsin cosplay, what gave me the biggest headache was that pair of giant white Animal ears and that enormous fluffy tail.
Honestly, this styling had so many hair and makeup details. To complement the white hair, the base makeup was done very pale, and the eye makeup used a wide red gradient blend. Paired with red contacts, looking in the mirror felt a bit supernatural, but camera lenses wash out makeup, so it turned out just right on film. Red curse sigils were drawn across my forehead, the corners of my eyes, arms, and chest; each stroke had to be traced slowly and meticulously, terrified that a trembling hand would mess it up. Waterproof body paint was used, taking quite a while of vigorous scrubbing to wash clean after the shoot. The wig is a striking, brilliant pure white, and trimming the bangs took a long time to achieve the current effect.
The garment features a classic black, red, and white color-blocked design, where a black tube mini dress is draped with wide red and white flowing sashes, billowing gracefully with movement in a Traditional Chinese style aesthetic. Blue gems and hollow-carved gold floral ornaments accent the chest, while the red choker around the neck is a finishing touch. Because the skirt is quite short, slightly larger movements could easily cause accidental exposure, so adjusting the skirt drape required constant vigilance.
To emphasize that Oriental fantasy moonlit night vibe, the studio set up a wooden backdrop wall adorned with calligraphy scrolls and cherry blossom branches. Crucially, the massive moon lightbox behind me—actually an intensely bright circular light fixture—cast a natural, luminous rim light across the wig, making the scene feel exceptionally dreamy. However, the lightbox generated substantial heat, leaving my back sweating after prolonged shooting.
In my interpretation, Hsin embodies a blend of cunning, allure, and the instinctual alertness and wildness of an animal. Therefore, during the shoot, the photographer constantly guided me to channel a fox-like presence—such as lying across a blanket curling hair with a finger, or sitting with one leg bent while gazing directly into the lens with a touch of teasing flirtation. One pose involved sticking my tongue out; while I felt a bit shy during shooting, the result turned out quite playful. There was also a profile glance looking back, striving to display the curves of the back and tail to the fullest.
The fluffy Animal ears were attached to a headband; because they were so heavy, numerous black bobby pins were needed to anchor them securely, leaving my scalp aching by the end of the day. The large tail was pinned to the back of my waist, requiring me to lift my skirt when walking to avoid stepping on the tail and tripping over.
Although the entire photoshoot was quite an ordeal, seeing that interplay of light and shadow alongside the fluffy textures in the final photos made all the hard work completely worthwhile. Being able to experiment with such a stylistically distinct look was an incredibly satisfying experience for a cosplayer in this cosplay journey.
