[Chisa cosplay] Real Hair Cosplay Challenge as Wuthering Waves' Chisa Kuchiba: The Red-and-Black Aesthetic is a Perfect Match

This shoot was truly a massive challenge. In the past, I always relied on wigs because they are easy to manage and shape, but this time I decided to do a full real hair cosplay to bring Chisa Kuchiba from Wuthering Waves to life. Recreating the two signature long strands framing her face took an immense amount of combing and styling. Natural hair is far less cooperative than a wig; it tends to frizz and go flat. Before stepping in front of the lens, I used copious amounts of styling spray and discreetly added hair extensions at the tips just to maintain that flawless curve and length.

The striking red contact lenses made an instant difference the moment I put them on, immediately shifting my gaze. Paired with the vibrant red tie, the overall red-and-black tone was set right away. The outfit combined a navy sailor uniform with a slate-blue Techwear jacket—wearing it felt amazing, striking the perfect balance between collegiate freshness and battle-ready cool. The jacket is detailed with zippers, webbing straps, and patches, making it slightly tricky to take on and off. The fabric is also quite stiff and prone to stubborn creases, so I had to smooth it out by hand between takes to maintain that sharp silhouette, but the end result looked incredible.

Going with a midriff-baring style paired with black stockings and a thigh ring created lines that I was thoroughly happy with. During the shoot, the ambient light had a dim reddish hue, which demanded precise lighting setups. We wanted to emphasize the visual echo between the red eyes and red tie while contrasting my paler skin tone against the warm ambient red. I continuously tweaked my poses to capture that detached, tsundere, slightly world-weary persona, which required exact command over my expression and aura. Especially for the pose where I sit on the yellow-legged chair partially obscuring my face, I adjusted multiple times to elongate the leg lines and position the leg ring just right. Maintaining upper-body core balance was crucial to avoid slouching while looking relaxed—definitely a core workout.

The clear advantage of real hair is how natural it looks without the artificial stiffness of a wig. However, real hair introduced its own set of hurdles, such as lacking root volume, requiring extra effort to lift the crown, and constantly misting and reshaping the bangs to keep them in place. Still, I was thrilled with the outcome; so many subtle details came through, and the red lenses had a subtle glint under the lights. I also experimented with various expressions, ranging from a lowered, icy stare to faint, languid micro-expressions. Combined with the tactile texture of the Techwear piece and the accent of the black stockings, the overall tension in these photos is something I really love.

To complement the dark red atmosphere, the makeup was specially tailored with a soft, diffused red eyeshadow to highlight the crimson pupils. When putting on or taking off the jacket, I had to be extra careful not to catch the sleeves on my hair, since real hair is so delicate to maintain. The white trim on the sailor uniform stood out delicately under the lighting, layering cleanly against the dark jacket and black stockings. Looking back at the whole process—from figuring out how to blend the extensions and curl the bangs to fine-tuning the angle of the leg ring—it took far more time and effort than wearing a wig. Yet, it gave me a completely unique experience. That natural, airy flutter of real hair moving with every motion is something a wig simply cannot replicate.
