The Convention photos from the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo have finally been retouched! This time, I brought to life the Garden OC nurse theme for New Jersey cosplay from Azur Lane—I personally adore this 'Exclusive Consultation Time' concept. The weather in Guangzhou was blistering hot that day with glaring sunlight, posing quite a challenge for outdoor shooting. Fortunately, the photographer shot with a Sony A7M4 paired with a Tamron 35-100mm lens, a focal range that proved exceptionally practical for capturing Convention photos. It cleanly eliminated crowded attendees in the background, utilizing telephoto compression to pull distant modern architecture closer while creating creamy background blur with a wide aperture, resulting in a remarkably high hit rate for good shots.
To align with the Nurse cosplay theme, I deliberately chose a light blue nurse uniform. The design is packed with delicate accents like puff sleeves and ruffled trim, complemented by a cutout at the chest that introduces an airy lightness. For the lower half, I styled white over-the-knee White stockings and garter straps alongside white block-heeled pumps; this all-white palette looked crisp, radiant, and clean under the bright sunlight. One slight downside was that the asphalt ground easily dirtied the soles of the white heels, requiring thorough cleaning after the shoot. For props, I prepared a blue stethoscope, a syringe, and a blue-and-white storage box. Originally brought just to hold personal belongings, the box matched the outfit's color scheme so perfectly that we adopted it directly into the frame as a photoshoot prop.
In the second photo where I rest my foot on the storage box, I initially just wanted to slip off my shoe to give my foot a break after walking around the convention in heels all day. Unexpectedly, the photographer pointed out that resting my foot on the box felt delightfully candid and lived-in. Framed alongside the White stockings and mini skirt, it accentuated the leg lines beautifully, so we naturally shot a whole series around it. That is often the true allure of Convention photos: free from the rigid staging of a studio, spontaneous moments often capture the most genuine, natural magic.
Because the concept was based on the Garden OC setting, I made a conscious effort to keep my expressions and body posture relaxed. Sitting on an outdoor folding chair with legs crossed, holding the stethoscope in one hand and the syringe in the other, my gaze drifted lazily toward the lens. The nurse archetype can be interpreted in numerous ways within ACG culture; here, amidst the bustling convention noise, I aimed to convey the character's personal 'exclusive clinic time'—an ambiance with a gentle sense of intimacy yet maintaining a subtle, alluring distance.
At the Firefly ACG Expo, I also connected with many fellow fans, exchanging thoughts on Azur Lane characters and costume crafting. Convention photos often demand timely delivery, so the post-processing primarily preserved the brilliant, radiant sunlight without applying heavy filters, keeping the luminous clarity of the original lighting intact. Overall, this New Jersey cosplay Garden OC venture was a smooth success, and special thanks go to junior cosplayer Xiaotao for collaborating on camera. I'll continue prepping new characters for upcoming expos, striving for even greater breakthroughs in costume craftsmanship and pose choreography.
