[Snow Miku 2021 cosplay] Hatsune Miku's Winter Anime Convention Chronicle

Coming out of Xifanli after watching the live show, I was still wondering whether the falling pellets were snow or rain. Unexpectedly, as soon as I walked to the subway station, large snowflakes were fluttering freely. Originally planning to walk back to my place, I had no choice but to hail a cab home.

Actually, this photoshoot was scheduled late last year, when I was full of anticipation for heavy snowfall in Beijing to match the Snow Miku theme and create ideal Snowscape photography. But throughout the entire winter, Beijing hardly saw any decent snow, and this wait dragged on into early spring. This time the snow came and went quickly; although we arrived at the Beijing Anime Convention venue the next day, there was no trace left of the snowfall. With no accumulated snow, there was none of that winter-exclusive magic. Looking back, walking in the snow would have been quite a lovely experience, but needing to visit the expo and do the photoshoot left little time for a leisurely stroll in the snow.

On the second day, we shot at the convention venue. Because the previous day's snow had completely melted, the setting turned into a purely indoor Beijing Anime Convention shoot. Although we lacked heavy snow as a natural backdrop for Snowscape photography, the convention lighting and venue ambiance actually made this costume look even more exquisite. The outfit primarily consists of a white coat and blue bows; the white fur around the collar is super soft to the touch and looked very high-textured under the lighting. The white square prop held in my hand served as a great anchor for posing, complementing a half-body composition to make the frame look more complete. To match the blue-eyed makeup, I deliberately adjusted the intensity of the eye makeup so the gaze would stand out sharply in front of the lens.

Since this wasn't my first time doing this Hatsune Miku cosplay, I was quite practiced with grooming the wig and wearing the headpieces. The blue bow on top with gold metallic accents, paired with the cascading pearl chains, really tested one's patience. During the official shoot, there were quite a lot of people around. After discussing with the photographer, we decided to find a relatively clean background and used a wide aperture to blur out the cluttered surroundings, letting the subject stand out. Fortunately, the lighting at the convention was good that day, allowing us to achieve ideal exposure without too much struggle.

Looking at myself in the photos, I was reminded of many fun memories from past shoots—especially that snowy night on the Purple Playground in 2023, which is truly nostalgic. Large snowflakes swirling in the chilly wind had a visual impact that indoor shoots simply couldn't rival. Perhaps because that memory was so vivid, failing to recreate that heavy snow backdrop this year felt a bit incomplete.

In private chats with the photographer, we agreed that missing the perfect timing is actually the norm. We often wonder why it's never the snow that's late, but rather just our inability to catch that exact moment when the weather cooperates. Facing such uncertainty, planning out the photoshoot in advance and then embracing the gap between expectation and reality is also a valuable growing experience.

Regardless, capturing this photo set at the Beijing Anime Convention fulfilled the photoshoot plan made last year. Looking at this carefully assembled outfit after shooting and recalling the rushed preparation before leaving the house, I'm still very satisfied with the final result.

Perhaps next winter will bring more fitting weather, and I can arrange a shoot that suits this Hatsune Miku cosplay character even better. After experiencing this fleeting early spring snow, I have a clearer vision for the next shoot. Looking forward, I hope the weather warms up and gives me more time to adjust my pace, treating every photoshoot as a deeper step into understanding the character.
