[Megurine Luka cosplay] Jinling Convention Photos: Blue Butterfly Wings and Lace Gloves

Here is a brief wrap-up of my Megurine Luka convention photos from the Jinling Youth Culture Expo. There's actually a little backstory to these photos: they turned out to be a set of 'photo returns with no returned photos'—after the shoot and exchanging contact info, the photographer completely ghosted without ever sending back the shots. Only those who've been through it truly understand that sting. Fortunately, I still had a few raw shots saved on my own camera with pretty solid quality, so today I decided to tidy them up and document the experience.

First, let's talk about the styling concept. The overall aesthetic leans into a dark Gothic style infused with subtle cyberpunk cyber-elements. The outfit centered on a black satin sleeveless dress, where the V-neck cut gracefully elongated the necklines. A band of white lace was spliced along the waist, introducing layered dimension across the expansive black fabric. The fingerless lace gloves were undeniably the crowning touch; paired with black nail polish, they made finger extensions and hand poses look remarkably elegant and detailed.

The props demanded the most dedication. The black headset and microphone atop my head were flanked by small green butterfly wing hairpieces, which, together with the translucent mini-horns framing my temples, fully nailed the character's iconic traits. The gigantic butterfly wings mounted on my back were the main centerpiece of this shoot: built with a rigid internal frame and draped in translucent iridescent laser foil. Under the mixed ambient top lighting and natural daylight from the expo hall's high windows, the wings shifted with flowing, alternating blue and teal lusters.

The wig was styled in long pink wavy curls, with the ends transitioning into a blue-green gradient. To maintain its voluminous fullness, I spent considerable time grooming it on-site at the convention, paying constant attention to keeping the blunt bangs and side tendrils from getting ruffled by breezes. For makeup, blue contact lenses were paired with reddish-brown blended eyeshadow and a slightly deeper crimson lip, emphasizing a poised, cool-toned demeanor that remained approachable.

During the shoot, I designed several concise body poses to complement this aesthetic. For example, a 'shh' gesture, resting an upright fingertip lightly against the lips. This pose highlights hand nuances, perfectly revealing the cutout texture of the lace gloves while drawing visual focus toward the face and blue eyes. Another posture involved raising both hands to adjust the headset microphone with naturally curved arms, which gently opened the shoulders while displaying the full breadth of the butterfly wings behind me. Standing inside the hall against industrial-style high clerestory windows with light washing in from the rear three-quarter angle, the specular reflections off the wings enriched the composition's chromatic layers.

From a photography standpoint, because the outfit carries vivid contrast—black dress, pink hair, blue wings, and green headset accents—post-production didn't require heavy-handed color grading at all; simply knocking down the background exposure allowed the subject contours and prop textures to pop cleanly. Overall, despite the disappointment of never receiving photos from the photographer, pulling off a character with such iconic props and distinct makeup was an absolute joy as a cosplayer. Sorting through the raw captures myself brings a satisfying closure to this trip to the Jinling Youth Culture Expo.
