[Arknights x Sanrio Collaboration] Journey of Steam Trails: Group Photoshoot Record on a Retro Railway

Once we decided that the keynote for this shoot was the fusion of steam train photography and Sanrio collaboration elements, my partners and I prepared for a month to finally bring this Arknights cosplay group photoshoot to life. As a collective shoot featuring a five-person lineup, the challenges on the shooting day were far greater than imagined. In particular, at our chosen retro locomotive venue, the gaps between the railway sleepers were quite wide, and the train body was packed with various steam pipe details. Fitting all five people's positions and actions into appropriate spaces truly owed a great deal to the coordination of the stage hands and photographer.

To recreate the steam-tracing travel theme of this collaboration setting, we put a lot of effort into costume details. The paneling layers of the jackets, color schemes of vests and ties, as well as various hats and hair ornaments, had to perfectly fit the characters' state of just stepping onto their journey. Deserving special mention is that heavy-duty high-waisted skirt and coat set; rather than light chiffon, we chose suit fabric with a certain degree of stiffness so that even in windy outdoor conditions, the drape and silhouette of the clothes held up well. For accessories, including an over-the-knee socks outfit style in the group, we brought three large retro leather suitcases. That black bomb prop tied with red cross straps was actually very heavy, and holding it posed a major challenge to balance. There was also a black-and-pink lace parasol, which served as a great tool for building atmosphere on set.

This outdoor shoot mainly relied on that classic No. 1079 steam locomotive, which served as a grand backdrop rich in vintage feel and industrial aesthetics on a retro railway. The black metal body, massive red driving wheels, and rusty details underneath created a delightful gap-moe contrast with our bright, cute collaboration outfits. We preserved the raw ruggedness of the locomotive without blurring the background excessively, letting both the train and the characters share the spotlight. To find camera angles during shooting, everyone practically took turns climbing that ladder, changing angles from head to tail several times while guarding against sudden gusts of wind blowing away wigs and plush toys—a scene that was quite chaotic yet extraordinarily joyful.

The indoor set was specially shot at a vintage furniture store, where heavy dark red drapes and sunlit windows gave us a completely different emotional ambiance. Indoor shoots rely even more heavily on light than outdoor scenes; luckily, that afternoon's sunlight refracted through the windows, creating very natural light-and-shadow transitions on the characters, making the finished shots feel like a miniature of bygone days. During the shoot, partners holding giant plush toys and various suitcases perfectly echoed that relaxed vibe of travelers.

In truth, for multi-person group photoshoots, the biggest difficulty is never how good an individual looks, but ensuring everyone's state resonates on the same wavelength. Though the five of us have distinct personalities, we surprisingly developed tacit synergy quickly on set. In this Arknights cosplay series for the Sanrio collaboration, there are many elements concerning steam, retro railway setting, and exploration. What we wanted to show was not merely costume accuracy, but that casual, free-spirited visual feel of embarking on a journey together. Laughing together in front of the train and fooling around by the window—though the lens only freezes a moment, I believe this atmosphere is where the true charm of a group shoot lies.

The biggest takeaway from this shoot was actually working with the on-site team—everyone was highly professional, from outfit prep and prop transportation to the photographer's remarkably swift candid captures. Especially when climbing those mechanical structures outdoors, everyone reminded each other about safety and controlled the shooting tempo well. After the photos came out, the style blending retro street fashion with railway travel indeed achieved the quality we aimed for. The happiest part of doing Sanrio collaboration cosplay is turning the expectations on design sketches into reality through our own photos. I hope this record of our steam-tracing adventure allows everyone to feel the warmth of team creation.
