[Yao cosplay] Shan Hai · Waves, quiet moments by the waterside

The tulle layering of this costume ate light and shadow much more than expected. Standing by the waterside outdoor location to shoot, it was only when the breeze blew that I truly experienced the agile life of the character setting. Let's talk about the details of the styling first: the hairstyle selected was a silver-white short straight hair, paired with straight bangs and low-tied double ball buns, which both preserved the lightness of an elf and avoided looking overly cluttered in the windy waterside scene. For the ears, pointed ear props were used, with the edges covered by foundation to make the transition between skin and the prosthetic more natural. The blue and wood-stitched antler decoration on top of the head is the visual center of the entire head look. To deal with the natural environment by the water, I reinforced the base of the antler decoration with hot melt glue to ensure it wouldn't shake during movements like lifting the head and glancing back from the side.

The costume selected a gradient pairing of cyan-blue and lake-blue. Under the photographer's soft light and the dusk natural light, the fabric can present highly delicate wave textures. The top features a loose cross-collar design with sleeves treated in a lantern shape, and the wrists wore dark grey fingerless gloves for easily gripping the prop. The skirt hem is stacked in several layers, with the outermost layer being an extremely lightweight semi-transparent blue tulle that forms a large fan-shaped arc following turning movements. The skirt is also embellished with several white imitation pearl buttons, along with yellow tassels hanging from the waist and chest. These bright colors and metallic textures dotted on the cool-toned fabric break the monotony of the colors. The lower garment is a light greyish-white tight pants paired with blue-and-gold color-blocked ankle boots, making the overall body proportions look highly elongated when standing on the waterside reef.

The most core prop for this shoot is that long-handled wand. The shaft is a slender purplish-blue rod, and the top features a semi-transparent cyan water globe styling, with the outer layer wrapped in a metallic-textured hollowed-out bracket. The center of gravity of this prop leans upward, so holding it with one hand requires mastering balance, especially under the action of supporting it with one hand in photo three, needing to steady the strength of the lower body to make the posture look calm and unhurried.

The outdoor location was chosen next to an open water area. The background features the sky at dusk, where the pink-orange glow and the cyan-blue tulle dress on the character form a highly comfortable warm-cold contrast. The water surface ripples with light, happens to form a visual echo with the cyan globe at the top of the wand. During intervals of the shoot, a flock of waterbirds flew past the lens, perfectly creating a quiet yet vast atmosphere. During the shoot, the wind by the water kept blowing the skirt hem and thin tulle. Under a backlit environment, I finely adjusted the angle of the headpiece, letting the antler decoration outline a clear semi-silhouette contour. The facial makeup adapts well to this cold atmosphere; besides the transition of highlights and shadows, the eye section also used blue-grey eyeshadow to light up the pupils. When shooting backlit, combining large areas of negative space with natural light can make both eyes look clearer.

Because the tulle material of the skirt hem is exceptionally thin and light, straightening it out was actually quite time-consuming. Every time standing on a waterside wooden pile or a gravel beach, one must carefully avoid dead grass and branches to prevent the tulle skirt from getting snagged. During this process, I was also trying my best to figure out the character's mind of being detached from the mundane world and quietly guarding. Compared to complex special effects or magnificent movements, this frame of quietly holding the wand in the waterside dusk with a breeze blowing can more directly convey the character's own ethereal and soft nature. I hope everyone can feel that delicate emotion belonging to the waterside from these few light and shadow records in this Chinese-style cosplay project.
