[Yao cosplay] The Deer Spirit Girl Under the Cherry Blossom Trees

Choosing to shoot this character inspired by the deer spirit during the peak bloom was mainly because the cherry blossom grove here always gives off a quiet yet vibrant feeling. Putting on this gear, I did my best to capture that lively, agile sense of the character drifting between humanity and nature. I'm personally quite satisfied with how today's final photos of this character from Honor of Kings turned out.

Let's first talk about this outfit, makeup, and styling. This time, I opted for pink braided hair paired with light purple eyes. This hair and eye color echo the palette of the petals beautifully, making the overall frame look softer and more natural. The texture of the animal ears and fluff was handled very delicately; to pursue realism, the white plush sections have a natural matte look under the sunlight. For makeup, I still chose a relatively clear, translucent base, focusing on the layers of the eye makeup. Through warm-toned eyeshadow and a slightly upturned eyeliner, I brought out a touch of a mysterious yet playful aura while preserving some of her non-human character traits.

The design of the costume actually focuses heavily on combining wildness with childhood innocence. The upper body features a white plush shawl paired with brown textured fabric. The neck accessory is a somewhat rugged, handcrafted beaded piece, with alternating red and green colors jumping out against the pure white and earth-toned base, enhancing the visual focus. The brown bracers and cyan jade bangle on my arms are hard-textured elements, but when paired together, they create a wonderful contrast with the soft pink hair. The lower half consists of an irregular shredded leather skirt, combined with plush leg-wraps and boots. While this styling looks beautiful, it actually posed certain restrictions on my range of motion during the shoot, feeling a bit tight especially when squatting or raising my arms dramatically. But for the sake of the final images, it was completely worth it. The blue staff held in my hand is also a major plus prop; the cool-toned blue serves as a great balance in a frame filled with pink and brown, preventing the overall warm tone from looking too overwhelming.

The natural light on the day of this outdoor cosplay shoot was absolutely amazing. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the cherry blossom trees, casting dappled light and shadow on the ground and on us. This organic, dappled feel is far more authentic and natural than artificial studio lights, adding a lot of storytelling depth to the frame. To match this artistic mood, I tried my best to mimic some light, strolling postures in the forest for the action design. Poses like the one in the photo—one leg slightly bent, an arm raised to touch a flower branch—actually tested my balance quite a bit, not to mention having to hold the staff while keeping my center of gravity steady. But it is precisely because of these subconscious physical details that the photos don't look like forced poses, but rather make it seem as though I am genuinely immersed in the sea of flowers. The close-up candid capture in Figure 1 also feels highly agile; the slight head tilt and half-raised hand gesture, paired with a bit of reflection on the edge of the staff, beautifully capture that split-second atmosphere of preparing to cast some natural magic.

Of course, the shooting process wasn't entirely smooth sailing. For example, there were so many branches overhead that if I wasn't careful, they would brush against the fluffy wig, and a careless move could even snag and mess it up. So, every time we transitioned to adjust my position, I had to shield my head very carefully. Also, although it looked like a warm spring day with blooming flowers, there was still quite a bit of dampness in the woods during the mornings and evenings, and I could actually feel a slight chill wearing this. Therefore, whenever the lighting was just right, we had to hurry and do continuous burst shots, hoping to capture the most natural facial expressions and body language.

During post-processing, I specifically asked the photographer not to do overly exaggerated skin smoothing or warping, preserving the real texture of the skin and the transitions between light and shadow. We added a bit of saturation to the petal colors to make the pink layers richer, but the overall color tone still leans toward a soft Japanese-style Sakura Photograph aesthetic, using appropriate contrast to highlight the fabric weave of the costume and the fluffiness of the hair. This kind of outdoor natural light shoot easily captures richly layered shadows; with just a few minor tweaks in post, the three-dimensional feel of the entire frame stands out beautifully.

This shoot during the peak bloom actually allowed me to perceive this character on a deeper level. She isn't just a purely cute figure; against the backdrop of the forest and numerous blossoms, the character's innate loneliness, mystery, and sense of companionship feel much more real. Although this is roleplay, during such a quiet afternoon under the cherry blossom trees, there were moments when I briefly forgot I was working, feeling as though I had also blended into this scenery woven of spring breeze and petals. This is probably the true charm of photography and cosplay.
